A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

It has been a great week to be a Charger and one of our few, five day weeks during the winter months. A few highlights:

Highlights

  • Student Voice: Throughout the week, I have enjoyed the opportunity to talk with our students in our three Leadership classes, engage with our SEALs, and have conversations with English DE students regarding topics they are passionate about. Our Charger voices are positive and powerful. It has inspiring to hear their ideas about ensuring all students feel safe, welcome, and included. I am excited to collaborate with students on next steps.
  • Academic Advising: Academic advising is in full swing for the 24-25 school year. I enjoyed visiting with our future Chargers throughout the past week at Franklin, Rocky Run and Carson middle schools. Our class of 2027, current freshman, met to review course selection and our entire student body attended our Electives fair this week to explore options for next school year. Ms. Rodriguez in our College and Career Center hosted a very well attended Junior College Readiness night with Deans from GMU, UVA and Kentucky. Our Chantilly Academy will host an open house on January 18 from 6:30-8 PM. Throughout this advising period that continues until early March, our teachers are connecting with students 1:1 to support their individual goals and aspirations. Be sure to check in with your student about the advising process and don't hesitate to reach out to our amazing school counseling staff with questions.

Attendance Notification Updates:

Attendance matters! As a part of our continued efforts to communicate with families and students about the importance of consistent student attendance, we have been sharing several regular reports.

Weekly Tardy Emails:  All Chantilly families should be receiving Tardy notification emails each Monday for their student(s). These emails are intended to keep families informed, much like the weekly SIS emails, and can serve as an opportunity to have conversations about attendance at home. If any consequence or follow-up is needed, the student's administrator will be in contact with the parent/guardian.  The tardy notification email address used for mail merges is not monitored regularly. Please follow instructions on the letters and direct all inquires to your student's administrator or school counselor.

Attendance Report Card: Every Chantilly student will receive an attendance report card for their first semester at the end of second quarter. Please look for this report card to come via email during the first week in February. Report cards will include the student’s attendance status (Chronically absent, At risk to be chronically absent, or Not at risk).

Chronically Absent status is defined as missing more than 10% of the school year for any reason, excused (EXC) or unexcused (UNX).

Chronically Absent rate only considers full day absences, and is based on a 180-school day year meaning missing 18 days or more will cause a student to be CA. (This can be as little as just 2-3 days per month.)

You can review all Chantilly HS Attendance procedures on our website.

As always, I welcome your feedback, observations and questions.  Please share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here.  I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

💲 Soft Launch of a New Financial Aid Form

Colleges and career schools use the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form to determine how much financial aid each student is eligible to receive. This aid could include grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans.

Any college-bound student — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form.

The form is currently available for short periods of time while it is being updated to provide a better experience. Learn more about the 2024–25 FAFSA form.

No Cost Therapy for High Schoolers

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Hazel Health therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.

Students can be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect the family with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.

Learn how to opt your students into this service.
