Curriculum Night collage

The Auto Tech table was just one of MANY to visit at Curriculum Night!

January 12, 2024

It has been an action-packed week here at Fairfax High School. Monday evening, we celebrated award winning staff and students at the City of Fairfax School Board meeting. It was a great evening to recognize academics, athletics, arts, and employee excellence! (In my ROARING cheerleader voice- FHS-- WE ARE THE BEST!)

Martin Luther King, Jr. shared, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” These principles remain true today in our daily practices. Landmark court case presentations, 3-D art image rendering, gallery walks for fact checking in the history hallways, real world math application problems, industry interview skills inspection, DECA days for social collaboration, and essay analysis are just a snapshot of the learning activities we engaged in this week. Every day we are committed to deepening our learning.

Last night we hosted our Lion Curriculum Night and welcomed both our current students and several members of the Class of 2028! The energy was palpable as students and families considered all of the course offerings at FHS. Our teachers were elated to meet our families and share their own passion and enthusiasm for their teaching, the school, and our community.

The countdown to second semester is here. We want to remind families that students have the opportunity to visit two teachers during Lion Time each gray day, and that the learning lounge is available for students every Wednesday and Thursday (our late bus days). We look forward to finishing this quarter strong.

Stay warm, stay safe, and stay connected this extended weekend.

In partnership always,

Student Spotlight

Nate Smith

NSmith student

Nathan Smith has been chosen as the Spotlight Student for November/December. Nathan has earned four PAWSitive referrals, showing his commitment to the values of Fairfax High School. Nathan has been given three positive referrals for Promoting Empathy, showing Nathan’s character as a student who finds kindness important. Nathan believes it’s “too exhausting to be negative” so “surrounding [him]self with great people makes it easier to be kind.”  If you’re wondering how Nathan managed to earn four positive referrals, it’s because he’s always seeking to better himself, noting that Fairfax has “amazing opportunities for growth” and there are “a broad range of activities and courses… from k-pop to theater all the way to math bowls and science fairs.”  In his school involvement, it’s clear kindness matters, and Nathan shows that daily.

Volunteer with Give Together

FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen. The school division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Students and families can volunteer on Monday, January 15, at Volunteer Fairfax’s Give Together event. It is designed to engage families with children (ages 5-12) in service learning.  Projects will include a food drive, assembling caring kits for community members who need support, making no-tie fleece blankets for veterans, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare.

Students ages 13 to 18 are welcome to serve as teen event volunteers. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Thank you, Principal Aye!

Fairfax High School is SO thankful and grateful to have Dr. Georgina Aye as our Principal! Dr. Aye is a fierce advocate for students and staff, and has worked hard to build a supportive, welcoming community.

She is constantly in the hallways, in the classrooms, and cafeteria, at the games, concerts, activities and everything FHS! Her impact has been profound and heartfelt, and we know the ROAR will only continue! Thank you, Dr. Aye. 🦁 💖

❄️Snow Days this Winter

FCPS Snow Plow

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

Any college-bound student — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form.

Fairfax Academy Theatre Presents:
Cry-Baby, The Musical - tickets on sale 1/19/24

Academy theatre poster

Based on the cult classic 1990 John Waters film, this jumping, jiving Tony nominee is a rebellious teen comedy event! It's 1954. Everyone likes Ike, nobody likes communism and Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker is the coolest boy in Baltimore. He's a bad boy with a good cause – truth, justice and the pursuit of rock and roll. Cry-Baby and the square rich girl, Allison, are star-crossed lovers at the center of this world. Fueled by hormones and the new rhythms of rock and roll, she turns her back on her squeaky-clean boyfriend, Baldwin, to become a "drape" (a Baltimore juvenile delinquent) and Cry-Baby's moll. At the other end of the topsy-turvy moral meritocracy of 1954 America, Baldwin is the king of the squares and leads his close-harmony pals against the juvenile delinquents, who are ultimately arrested for arson, sending the drapes all off to prison. It's Romeo and Juliet meets High School Hellcats.

Tickets go on sale starting January 19th! Cry-Baby The Musical
