A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

Happy New Year and wishing all a healthy start to 2024!  We have had a very busy start to the new year.  A few highlights:

  • Curriculum Night for rising Chargers and Curriculum Fair: We had an outstanding turnout for our presentations to rising 9th grade students and their families. I am very grateful to all of our instructional department chairs for presenting to families and connecting with our students. Special thanks to FCPS Translation services and our Family Liaisons for supporting our session for our families who speak other languages - Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese and Arabic, with real time translations. I am so proud of our student panel who shared their perspectives on the transition to high school and best advice about course selections and getting connected at Chantilly. As a follow up to Curriculum Night our school counselors are visiting Franklin, Rocky Run and Rachel Carson Middle Schools over the next week to present to our future Chargers. I am looking forward to meeting with our class of 2028 at the school visits.
  • Chantilly Pyramid Night: It was energizing to see the large community turnout for our two exciting basketball games, sideline cheer, and dance team performances earlier this week. We also had some fun with competitive student-staff halftime competitions. Chantilly Pyramid definitely is Leading the CHARGE with school spirit and support for our student athletes.
  • Region 5 Visit to Chantilly: It was a pleasure to host Region 5 Executive Principal, Jay Pearson, today.  We spent our time together connecting with students in the hallways and cafeteria and visiting classrooms to see learning in action. We observed a mock trial in Ms. Mohrbacher's AP Government class, AVID structures in action in Ms. Molloy's class, Dental Careers students applying their knowledge of radiology, as well as Yoga in Air Force JROTC.  Meaningful learning experiences and student engagement were evident throughout Chantilly.
  • Collaboration with SEALs:  This week our Student Equity Ambassador Leaders (SEALs) and Equity Lead teachers, Ms. Mohrbacher and Mr. Steck, collaborated with administrators to discuss how to ensure all students, staff, and families feel safe and welcome at Chantilly. Together we are working on plans to work with our Chantilly media, Purple Tide and Knightly News, and share lessons during Learning Seminar through student led campaigns focused on inclusivity, belonging, and collective accountability to take care of our building and our community. More coming soon!

Attendance Reminders:

As we begin 2024 please remember to report student absences, late arrivals, and early dismissal requests to the subschools (Attendance Site).  Please call by 9:30 AM and leave a message to avoid delays and attendance messages.

Parking Reminder:

Please note that all numbered parking spots in our lots are assigned to staff or students at all times. Please do not park adjacent to the tennis courts or near the stadium before school hours as this impacts Chantilly student and staff access to parking and on time arrival.  Thank you!

As always, I welcome your feedback, observations and questions.  Please share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here.  I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

💲 Soft Launch of a New Financial Aid Form

Colleges and career schools use the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form to determine how much financial aid each student is eligible to receive. This aid could include grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans.

Any college-bound student — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form.

The form is currently available for short periods of time while it is being updated to provide a better experience. Learn more about the 2024–25 FAFSA form.

🗓️ Save the Date: Academy Open Houses Begin This Month!

Is your child interested in architecture and construction, information technology, or health science? FCPS high school academies will hold open houses for interested students beginning in mid-January.

A high school Academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses to prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Students enrolling in Academy elective courses will be provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of career experiences including shadowing, mentoring, or internships with local businesses.

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.

No Cost Therapy for High Schoolers

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Hazel Health therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.

Students can be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect the family with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.

Learn how to opt your students into this service.
