Note from Dr. Sheers

Winter Break is here!

A heartfelt appreciation goes out to our incredible families. Whether it's volunteering in classrooms, participating in Read-in Day, ensuring our staff candy bowl is well-stocked, acquiring new microwaves, or orchestrating and supporting school events, your commitment forms the bedrock of student achievement.

To our dedicated staff, thank you for your hard work and unwavering dedication throughout the year. Your contributions make our school a truly special place!

Please note, while Ms. Braxton and I are working during winter break, our schedule may fluctuate. We kindly request that you call or email in advance before visiting the school.

May your break be filled with happiness, laughter, and cherished memories. Wishing you a delightful and joyful holiday season! We will see you back on Tuesday, January 2!

Important Information

SEL Screener
One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.

The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

Distribution of Community Fliers
West Springfield Elementary School offers the opportunity for nonprofit organizations to make their materials available to students and parents. Community fliers can be sent home in student’s backpacks on February 1. Procedures to follow can be found here.

Dual Language Immersion Registration
All rising kindergarten and first grade students who live in Fairfax County may enter a lottery to participate in Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. In DLI programs, students are learning elementary content in two languages with students spending half of the day learning in either language. English Language Arts and Social Studies are taught in English. Math, Science, Health, and Target Language Arts are taught in another language. FCPS offers DLI programs in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Online lottery application begins on January 22nd (9 a.m.). A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school is required. FCPS does not provide transportation for students who live outside the attendance area of the DLI school. A one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).  For more information including program sites and information sessions, please visit: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/dual-language-immersion-programs-registration.
