A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I am reminded that there are so many connections within the Chantilly community that I am grateful for and extend thanks on behalf of our staff and students to all of our families for your ongoing partnership and support. I encourage you and our students to share gratitude with our staff through a card, email, or nomination for an FCPS Outstanding employee award nomination (see below). I wish each of you all the joys of an extended holiday weekend and hope that you are able to spend time with the people you love doing the things you love!  Happy Thanksgiving.

It is my pleasure to share some of the amazing connections in our Charger community from this past week:

  • Over 70 of our Chargers were celebrated for their hard work, perseverance, academic, attendance, and behavior improvements, as well as their character, at our Quarter 1 On a Roll ceremony on Monday. Keep up the great work Chargers! You can see the list of recipients here.
  • It was a pleasure to travel to the VA Music Educators Association conference in Richmond this week to support our music program. Students from Chantilly Jazz, Choir, and Orchestra were selected to perform and be recognized in state level ensembles. Thank you to Evan Ayars, Aaron Mynes, Douglas Maloney, and Christopher Riechers for their leadership and to all of our families for supporting their students' passion for music.
  • We LOVE welcoming our future Chargers to Chantilly! This week, Chantilly Academy connected with Young Scholars from Rachel Carson MS, Franklin MS, and Rocky Run MS as they visited and learned about the opportunities ahead of them at CHS.  Thank you to Scott Settar and the Academy staff for showcasing the learning paths available to all students.
  • Our Athletic and Drama Boosters as well as PTSA had productive meetings this week and continue be a great support to our families and student programs. We are so grateful for their partnership. As we kick of our winter programs and seasons, it is a great time to get connected and involved by joining one or more of our organizations. Visit here to learn how to join!

Please be sure to take a look at the Charger Headlines below for additional information, updates, and resources. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

Updates from Student Services

College Admissions

Over the past three years, we have seen a marked increase in the number of students who elect to apply early decision or early action to colleges and universities.  Early decision and early action admission requires students to apply in October or November(generally by November 1) and students learn of their acceptance status in December or January.  To support our students applying early decision and early action, in advance of the November 1 deadline, we submitted 3701 transcripts.  Our nine CHS School Counselors wrote 350 letters of recommendation; each written to provide admissions staff with an in-depth summary of a student’s strengths, interests, and circumstances.   Many seniors are still working on their applications and we will continue to support them on their post-secondary journey.  We are proud of our strong college-going culture at CHS and of our hard-working students and school counselors!

Wellness/Student Supports On Wednesday, the student services team with assistance from 9th grade teachers, completed the Signs of Suicide(SOS) lesson and screening with all eligible 9th grade students(approximately 715 in total).  SOS is

  • is an evidence-based suicide prevention program.
  • is developed for middle and high schools.
  • includes education and screening.
  • is required for all students in grades 7, 9, and 11.
  • teaches students
    • how to identify the signs of depression and suicide in themselves and others.
    • ways to access support.
  • includes resources for training faculty, staff, and parents on:
    • how to recognize when a student is in crisis.
    • how to respond using the Acknowledge, Care, Tell (ACT) protocol.

Acknowledge, Care, Tell (ACT)

The lesson uses the Acknowledge, Care, Tell (ACT) framework. This framework empowers students to support others and seek help themselves.

  • The first step is to acknowledge signs of suicide or depression in themselves or friends.
  • Next they will show that they care by having a conversation, and lastly they will tell a trusted adult.

Following the lesson, school teams administer the Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression (BSAD). The BSAD is a screening tool to help students identify symptoms consistent with depression and or suicide risk. The school counselor, school psychologist, and school social worker provide individual follow-up based on the BSAD screen results and individual referral. The mental health screening is for educational purposes and does not provide a diagnosis.

The Signs of Suicide program also includes resources for training faculty, staff, and parents on how to recognize when a student is in crisis and how to respond using the ACT protocol.

Visit www.mindwise.org/parents for:

  • information on warning signs for youth suicide,
  • useful resources
  • key messages students will learn.

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms  Wednesday, November 8. Please be sure to return paper forms by Friday, November 17. The electronic form will continue to be available in SIS ParentVUE until January 2024.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

No Cost Therapy for High Schoolers

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Hazel Health therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.

Students can be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect the family with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.
