A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

It has been a great week to be a Charger. I have enjoyed connecting with our students and families at many events including:

  • Chantilly Pyramid Choral Concerts: We welcomed our Chantilly feeder elementary and middle school choirs for two outstanding combined choral concerts. Thank you to Director, Evan Ayars The future is bright for our choir programs!
  • District finals for Cross Country and Volleyball: Our athletes gave it their all in the finals for both sports. Congratulations to our Boys Cross Country team who are the Concorde District Champions. Girls Volleyball are the District runner ups and both teams will now move on to the Regional competition.
  • Orchestra Halloween Concert: We welcomed our friends from Rachel Carson MS for a spooktacular performance of haunting tunes by our Chantilly and Carson orchestras. Thank you to Director, Aaron Mines for showcasing the talents of our orchestra students.
  • Our second Chantilly Wellness Fair of the year was a huge success. Therapy dogs, pickleball, tie dyes, were just a few of the highlights as students and staff alike enjoyed time to connect and recharge!

Please be sure to take a look at the Charger Headlines below for additional information, updates and resources. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

Federal Impact Aid Survey Now Online.  Help Us Save Paper! Parent Access to Online Federal Impact Aid Survey

Impact Aid programs and grants are designed to assist local school districts that enroll federally connected students.

The federal presence in our area and the significant tax exemptions available to federally connected personnel, businesses, and agencies has qualified Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) to be eligible for federal Impact Aid grants.

Impact Aid programs and grants are designed to assist local school districts that enroll federally connected students. The grants from these programs will become part of FCPS' general operating budget and are critical to ensuring that all children in FCPS receive an excellent education. FCPS anticipates receiving approximately $3,000,000 in Impact Aid funds.

FCPS uses the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid to identify federally connected students and to support our request for Impact Aid resources. In October, the survey will be made available to FCPS families online through ParentVue for two weeks. After that, families who have not completed the survey will have a printed copy sent home with each child.

October 16, 2023 through October 31, 2023, FCPS parents will have the option to fill out the Federal Impact Aid Survey online through their ParentVue account. Below are the visual steps for a parent to get to the survey in SIS ParentVue.

More Information

Fall 2023 SEL Screener

Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:

  • Self-Management & Responsible Decision Making
  • Social Awareness & Relationship Skills
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Supportive Relationships
  • Belonging
  • Cultural Awareness & Action *grades 6-12 only
  • Challenging Feelings

Chantilly HS students who were not opted out completed the Fall Wellness Screener on October 20, 2023 during LS 7.  We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early December. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Once we have an updated timeline, we will provide communication via this weekly message.  For more information, please visit this webpage.

National Honor Society Membership Application Deadline

10th-12th grade students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher received a message in their fcpsschools.net email this week with an invitation to apply for membership in the National Honor Society(NHS) at Chantilly.  Students who wish to be considered for membership must complete the required membership tasks by 11:59 PM on November 9, 2023.  The membership application includes three 250 word responses, student resume, and submission of the $25 NHS membership fee through Myschoolbucks.  Continued membership in NHS and the receipt of a NHS Graduation Cord requires students to maintain a 3.5 GPA, demonstrate leadership and character, and complete a minimum of 25 hours of service each year of membership. All membership hours must be submitted through X2Vol and indicate that they are for NHS hours. An induction ceremony will be held in January 2024 for all NHS Seniors. More details regarding induction will be shared in December 2023.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. All Fairfax County public schools have at least one school counselor, school psychologist, and school social worker.

Please reach out to one of these staff members to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Call your school or visit their website for staff members’ contact information. Find additional information to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

No Cost Therapy for High Schoolers

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Hazel Health therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.

Students can be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect the family with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.

Learn how to opt your students into this service.

⏰ Daylight Saving Time Ends
