Head Lice

Head Lice Information and Resources for Parents/Guardians

Students with live head lice do not need to be sent home early from school once a parent has been notified. However, students must begin appropriate treatment before returning to school. Any questions or need of additional resources, please contact the school health room at (703) 295-1112.

Head Lice Guidelines -Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) updated guidance for head lice to be in alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

The beginning of the school year is an ideal time to remind parents/guardians about head lice and its treatment. Although lice do not spread disease, they can be a nuisance and cause great concern in the community.

The following resources are available for parents/guardians to learn more about lice and its treatment:

Translated versions of these resources are also available.

If a student is found to have head lice and is in need of further assistance, schools should contact their public health nurse for additional resources and support.
