Principal's Message:

Dear Jackson Family,

I hope this message finds you well. We've had an eventful week at our school, and I want to share some important updates with you.

This week, all of our students participated in the Virginia Growth Assessment to evaluate their progress in reading and math. These assessments are crucial for tracking our students' academic development, and we appreciate their hard work and dedication during this testing period. Make-up assessments will continue through next week for those who may have missed them.

It is also the time of year when we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. This ongoing celebration allows us to recognize and honor the cultural and technical contributions that people of Hispanic heritage have made to our society. We will have various activities and events throughout the month to learn about and appreciate the rich diversity of Hispanic cultures.

Finally, I am delighted to announce that Dr. LaKenya Wright will be joining our team as acting Assistant Principal while Ms. Rose Moore is away on leave. Dr. Wright will supervise the Math and PE departments and will also assist me with supervision of Special Education. Her wide breath of expertise and dedication to student success and wellness make Dr. Wright a wonderful addition to our school community, and we look forward to having her become part of the Jackson Family!

Remember, there is no school on Monday in observance of Yom Kippur. We look forward to seeing everyone back next Tuesday! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful long weekend!

Sincerely

R. Jones

Did you know...?

Did you know that Luther Jackson Middle School uses restorative practices to help students resolve conflicts with one another? Restorative practices emphasize fostering a sense of community throughout the school to help prevent misconduct, as well as teaching students to accept responsibility for their actions and work to make amends with one another in a peaceful way that allows them to rebuild damaged relationships. Each of our school counselors are well-versed in restorative practices, and Jackson staff work with a district Restorative Justice specialist to help students forge healthy, positive relationships with their peers and teachers. For more information on restorative practices in our schools, please visit the division website here

News from AAP (Advanced Academic Programs):

Parents and teachers interested in referring students for the fall level IV screening must submit a level IV referral form to the school’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) by October 15,2023. Fall 2023 screening is only available to students newly enrolled in FCPS after January 1, 2023 who were not screened in Spring 2023.

If a parent feels that the ability test on file does not reflect the student’s current abilities, they may request a one-time retest. Please check with your school testing coordinator to be sure a student did not already have a retest in elementary school. Requests for retest must be made to the AART, school testing coordinator, or school administrator before the Oct 3-21 (2023) testing window in order to allow the school testing coordinator time to order tests from the Office of Assessment and Reporting. It is important that parents know that tests are not weighted in AAP screening and no test is required for Honors courses.

For information pertaining to the Spring 2024 screening process, testing and identification timeline or identification and placement, please contact Shawn English, srenglish@fcps.edu.
