A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

We have had a great week of connections at Chantilly HS. It was very exciting to experience our first home football game of the year last Thursday. I was engergized by the turnout we had from the community, and especially our students, in support of their peers in band, cheer, dance and football.  As I have connected with students in classrooms, hallways, and Leadership this week, I have asked students to share something good with me. I have heard that our Chargers feel welcome in our school, love our renewed school spirit, and that the year is off to a very calm and positive start. I have also appreciated hearing from our families about their student's beginning of the year experiences and how we can engage in partnerships to foster student succes. We value your feedback. Share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here.Thank you!

Visitors to the Building

We welcome visitors to Chantilly High School at Door 1. Please ring the doorbell and have a photo ID (driver's license preferred) available to present.  All visitors must check-in at the Main Office inside Door 1 and to the right. Our staff will help direct you to the appropriate personnel or office to assist you once you have checked in.

Student Late Arrival

When students arrive late or are returning to the building from an appointment, they must enter at Door 1 and then check in with their sub school to update their attendance.  Attendance matters!  Please see all of our attendance procedures by visiting our website.

Chantilly Health Room Reminders

What should I do if my student is not feeling well during school hours?  If you are contacted by your student, please remind them to ask for a pass to the health room. Once students have a pass to come to the health room, they are checked in, parents are contacted, and they are released if that is what parents want. Parents can simply pick them up at the main entrance and do not have to park and come into the school. They can also walk or drive home with permission from parents. Students will not be released from the subschool or main office without checking into the health room first.

Traffic Safety

Please remember that the volume of traffic around Chantilly HS during arrival and dismissal hours is very high.  There are no left turns out of Chantilly Parking Lot on the Door 2/3 side. Students should cross Stringfellow Road only at the marked cross walk at the stoplights. Please remind your students to follow these safety reminders as they drive and walk or bike to and from school.

Asha Jyothi - 5k Fun Run/Walk - September 17

Chantilly HS is grateful to our community partner Asha-Jyothi for their ongoing support of innovation and student programs in our Chantilly Pyramid community and beyond. Chantilly HS benefitted from the generous donation from Asha-Jyothi that funded the implementation of the Innovation Lab in our school library.

We encourage you to get involved to support the work of Asha-Jyothi by registering to participate in the annual 5k Fun Run/Walk on September 17.  Registration fees from Chantilly affiliated staff, students and families will be donated back to the school to support our programs. Register here

Charger Headlines:

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

Updates from Student Services

Learning Seminar/Charger Connect(LS/CC)- all students have now been assigned to a teacher for each LS period.  Students taking an academy or online campus course or who have an off campus waiver should check SIS Student VUE to verify their assigned location for those periods.  Attendance will be taken and students must report to their assigned teacher for all LS/CC periods.  If a student does not have an assigned LS/CC and they are here on campus on A days during our “3rd” period(LS/CC), they should inform their counselor in their sub school.

Schedule Change Requests- Deadlines for enrolling in online campus courses as well as to change elective courses have passed.  Students may request a schedule change to decrease rigor(ex:  Moving from an AP or DE course to an honors course).  These changes will only be made if space is available in the requested course.  No elective changes, moves to a higher level, or changing content will be permitted. Students should contact their counselor to request a schedule change provided it meets the above criteria.

Other upcoming deadlines:  Requests to change to pass/fail for a course must be submitted by September 21.   Requests to withdraw from a course without a WP or WF showing on the transcript must be submitted by November 21.  All requests should be submitted to student’s school counselor.

Senior Meetings:  Counselors will be meeting with all seniors on September 12 to talk about post-secondary planning and about college admissions.  They will also then be meeting individually with each senior through his/her/their government classes from September 18-September 29.   If your senior is planning to apply to college, please remind them to submit their counselor recommendation packet immediately if they haven’t already done so.

Our year is off to a great start- we are looking forward to working with our Class of 2024 as they really start to plan for their lives after Chantilly HS.

WL exam

World Languages Credit Exam

FCPS intends to transition the World Languages Credit Exam to a digital format through an external vendor that assesses linguistic proficiency. FCPS will be piloting a digital language proficiency assessment during SY 2023-24. When students register for the 2023 World Languages Credit Exam, they will be offered the opportunity to participate in the pilot assessment for the following languages: ASL, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Telugu.

Students who are selected to participate in the pilot will take both the FCPS World Languages Credit Exam and the pilot assessment. Credit will only be awarded from the results of the FCPS World Languages Credit Exam. Students who are selected to participate in the pilot will be notified after registration closes on October 5, 2023, and will receive additional information in October/November regarding the logistics of the pilot assessment. Information regarding the pilot will be communicated to selected students through the student and parent contact information on record in SIS.

2023 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. In late June, the School Board approved changes to the SR&R for the 2023-24 school year. Updates include a revision of dress code expectations, bystander expectations for students witnessing harmful or unsafe behaviors, bullying, and substance abuse responses. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Friday, September 29

How to Access Free Resources from Tutor.com

All FCPS students continue to have unlimited access to live, 24/7, one-on-one online tutoring services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Student participation is optional and parents/caregivers can opt their student(s) out of accessing the services. Get more information on the Tutor.com Online Tutoring Services webpage.

Students can access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology. Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is provided to families via the following: Elementary - How It Works and Middle & High - How It Works. Attendance Procedures

Procedures for Parents/Caregivers and Students

Prearranged Absences

  • The student will bring a note from the parent/guardian to the sub-school office OR parents will call the sub school office, stating the reason for the prearranged absence request and date(s) of the requested absence(s).
  •  Part-day and full-day absences except illness, death in family or medical appointments must be submitted at least two days prior to the absence.
  • The sub-school office will give a form to the student to take around to his/her teachers. Teachers will sign and write comments, if they choose.  Teachers will record date(s) of absence and provide a list of assignments that will be missed. The student will bring the form back to the sub-school office.
  • The sub-school principal will review teachers’ comments, if any.  The sub-school assistant principal may call parents to share teachers’ comments, etc.

Check-in/Tardiness - Unexcused Tardy Policy

  •   Students are to be marked tardy if they are not in the classroom when the bell finishes ringing.
  • Students arriving at school unexcused, between 8:10 and 8:15, may report directly to class and the teacher will mark them unexcused tardy.
  • Students arriving after 8:15 must check in at the sub-school regardless if it is excused or unexcused.
  • Students will be issued a check-in pass.

Early Release / Check-out

  • Parents are required to furnish a written excuse to OR call the student’s sub school including date, time, reason for the early dismissal and phone number for verification.
  • Students MUST always check in with their sub school before 8:10 a.m. to have an Ehall pass created for them. Parents will be contacted to confirm check-out if the student misses the 8:10 a.m. deadline.
  • Students must always check in with the sub school and obtain an EHALL PASS prior to leaving the school building.
  • When a student is sent home or a doctor’s attention is required, the SUBSCHOOL OFFICE will be notified at the end of the day. The school nurse will issue a check-out pass to the student.  The student MUST check out of school through the clinic when leaving the grounds because of illness.
  • The online attendance form can NOT be completed for “day-of” checkouts.

Parking at CHS

Parking on the campus of Chantilly High School and Chantilly Park (west side of Stringfellow Rd ) is strictly enforced with the use of assigned parking spots verified with required display of current year permits.  Violators will be ticketed with student accounts accumulating fines.   Vehicles will also be tagged for towing upon a repeat offense.   Signs notifying drivers of the parking restrictions are posted at each entrance.   Visitor spots are monitored and are strictly for temporary school visitors who check in at the main office.

Recognitions

Congratulations to Angela Moon! She has been recognized as an employee who shows that FCPS Cares.

I have never met Angela Moon in person, but she is one of my favorite people in FCPS. At our August In-Service, the first person there, even before the Social Studies team, was a nice but very panicked teacher who immediately inquired about resources for self-contained United States and Virginia History. Shortly after the in-service, I reached out to all 28 department chairs, and thankfully, Angie Rollet connected me with Angela. Despite it being the teacher's workweek, when there is never enough time, Angela offered to help this teacher. Not only did Angela share all of her resources with this teacher, but she also added him to her Schoology page to show him how she organizes the materials for her students. This past week, I had another teacher reach out to our office who was struggling with the same course. I reached back out to Angela, and unsurprisingly, she jumped at the chance to help a teacher in need. Chantilly High School is truly lucky to have Angela Moon on staff, and because of her selflessness, two other FCPS high schools and their students are being positively impacted by Angela!

This information is posted on the September 2023 FCPS CARES webpage, accessible at https://www.fcps.edu/news/fcps-cares-september-2023 .
