MVHS Back-to-School-Night (BTSN) Friday, September 8. 2023 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

We are excited to invite you to our Back-To-School Night.  This is an opportunity for families to meet their child’s teachers, learn about the curriculum and procedures for each class, and become better acquainted with the clubs, activities, and resources MVHS has to offer.  Families will have the flexibility to walk around at their leisure to follow their child’s schedule and visit the various tables set up around the school. All teachers will post their syllabus and BTSN slides in Schoology in a folder labeled BTSN for families to view if  you are unable to attend.

Directly following BTSN will be our Pyramid Night Football Game vs Friendship Academy at 7:00 p.m.  Fort Belvoir Garrison Commander Col. Messina will be in attendance for Military Appreciation and will do the opening coin toss.

New Military Family Life Counselor

We are so excited to introduce Shaista Pirzada (Ms. Shy), the new Military Family and Life Counselor here at Mount Vernon High School.  Ms. Shy can provide support, resources, and non-medical counseling to our military-connected students and families. Eligible students/families for the program include active-duty service members, reserves, and National Guard members.  Another focus of her position is to support military-connected students who are transitioning in and out of Mount Vernon.  If a student needs support, a signed informed consent form must be on file before supporting the student.  Please see attached informed consent form to share with families as needed and it may be returned via email or in person. Once the consent form is on file, the student is welcome to make an appointment.  Please see Mrs. Pirzada’s contact information below, and her schedule for this year. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.  She looks forward to meeting all the staff this year and is very excited to serve the military-connected students and families at Mount Vernon!

Lockdown Drills

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon.  Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

IMMUNIZATIONS

As we begin to look ahead to the new school year, I would like to remind caregivers that immunizations are required for all students in order to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy.

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations before the first day of school. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, you may make an appointment with your healthcare provider or visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of child immunization clinics.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations and bring that to school as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact Lorraine Fetterolf at lmfetterolf@fcps.edu.
