INFORMATION FROM YOU ADMINISTRATION TEAM
Parents: Please join us for our PTA meeting Monday, August 28th at 7 pm in our school’s library. Dr. Mizell will entertain questions regarding the start of the school year.
Dress Code
Parents: Effective Monday, August 28, 2023 Hughes Administration will be enforcing the dress code expectations of FCPS.
The FCPS student dress code has been updated and can be found here in Regulation 2613.12. It can also be found on pages 15 and 16 of the SR&R. We ask that parents review the dress code expectations with their students and help to ensure compliance. Things to consider when choosing what to wear to school are as follows:
- Avoid clothing including any inappropriate language, images, symbols, or references to weapons, alcohol, drugs, or illegal activity.
- Avoid any clothing that exposes undergarments, underwear, or private parts.
- Clothing for certain classes, such as physical education, may have additional expectations.
This year, we are staggering dismissal for safety measures. To help keep our students and staff safe, our School Resource Officer (SRO) offers the following:
School’s Parking Lot:
In the mornings, please do not drop students off in our parking lot. Doing so creates a safety issue for students and at times an inconvenience for our buses.
Kiss and Ride Guidelines:
- There are no U turns allowed. The signs are up and down Ridge Heights Road.
- Do not use community side streets and neighborhoods to turn around, as this is private property.
- Be mindful the speed limit is 25 mph at all times.
- When dropping your student off, pull all the way up as far as you can. This helps avoid traffic backups.
- Be extremely careful and patient as you merge back into the main road.
- Do not drop your student off on the opposite side of Ridge Heights. Please drop your student off on the school’s side of the road.
- Our School Resource Officer (SRO) and other Fairfax County Police Officers will enforce violations of traffic laws.
Your attention to this is most appreciated, as we work in tandem to keep our students safe.
SIS Gradebooks and Student Schedules
Parents will be able to view student grades in SIS ParentVUE beginning Tuesday, September 5th. While we have allowed some schedule changes as students may have realized a year-long elective was not what they thought or a core class level was too easy or challenging, after Thursday, August 31st we will not be making schedule changes. We do not make schedule changes for semester electives unless there was an error made. The classes have begun to build culture and community with teachers and students, and teachers have begun entering grades. Students (and parents/guardians) can connect with their teachers and counselor if they need support in a class.
Locker Requests
Beginning Monday, August 28th, students may request a locker. The locker request form will be available on the “Langston Hughes Student All Course” in Schoology, and the form is required to be turned in by Tuesday, September 5th. Please note that there will be gym lockers assigned to all students for PE classes and music lockers are available to store instruments in the band and orchestra classrooms.
Important notes about lockers: Lockers are property of the school. Please keep in mind that if a student requests a locker, the combination may not be shared, and the locker may only be used by the student assigned. Lockers are intended for the storage of books and clothing. Students should not leave valuables in their school or gym locker. Writing on the lockers is considered an act of vandalism. Lockers may be searched when there is reason to believe that the contents threaten the safety, health, or welfare of students.

Social Emotional Learning with Second Step
We want your child to be successful in school, and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. In order to support academic success, we know that students also need skills for overcoming challenges, making good decisions, handling emotions, and getting along with others.
Next week, we will begin Second Step Middle School, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to help students develop their social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help students both in and out of school. Second Step SEL lessons will take place during Connections, every Monday.
We want to partner with families to support Social-Emotional Learning. Each week you will find a summary of the SEL lesson here in our newsletter. We will also provide conversation starters to use with your student at home. Families are encouraged to discuss and reinforce these SEL topics.
Our first unit is Mindsets and Goals. Students will learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives. The lesson on August 28 will introduce your student to Second Step. Your student will identify challenges they might face when starting middle school and identify resources at Langston Hughes where they can get help. Family conversation starter: Tell your child about something that made you nervous when you started a new school year. Ask what makes them nervous and who they can go to for help at school.
If you have any questions about Second Step Middle School, please reach out to your student’s school counselor. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.
