It was so great to see everyone at Open House! We had a Roaring Good Time!
August 18, 2023
Greetings Fairfax High School Students, Family, and Friends,
THREE MORE SLEEPS and WE ARE BACK! It was great connecting with our staff, our families, and our students this week as we affirmed our commitments to CONNECT~EDUCATE~TRANSFORM at each of our summer events! "Fear the Roar" Open House Jam, student orientation, and a transformational teacher return brought that "ROAR"ing energy into our building. Fairfax High is always thriving when students and staff are present and optimally primed for BACK TO SCHOOL.
We look forward to welcoming back all students for the first day of school on Monday, August 21. Students will attend their 1, 3, 5, and 7 period classes. Enjoy the last weekend of summer and get ready for the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
Check out some tips below for a great first day!

Attendance Matters
Dear Parents/Caregivers and Students,
The staff at Fairfax High School are excited to welcome you to a new school year filled with opportunities to learn and engage!
I understand that there may be obstacles preventing students from attending school regularly, such as illness or personal circumstances. That’s why it is so important for our school team to work together with our students and families to remove any barriers. Regular school attendance is not only a basic right of every student but also a shared social value. We all belong here!
Attending school even if your student arrives late is valuable for their academic and social success at school. Please encourage your student to arrive on time every day and maintain regular attendance until the last day of school. Together, we can work toward increasing school attendance rates and improving academic outcomes for all our students.
Please read the tips below to support regular school attendance and foster a positive attitude in your student regarding school and education:
- Establish routines that help reduce stress.
- Maintain strong connections with friends and teachers to ensure prompt communication in case of any concern or emergency.
- Provide us with your updated email address and phone number.
- Review your student’s attendance record regularly and make necessary adjustments after tardiness or medical appointments to your school office.
We will do our best to listen and partner with you so that our children have a successful year. Do not hesitate to reach out to me with questions or concerns.
Sincerely, Brunilda Herring Dean of Students bsherring@fcps.edu

Transportation Update
Dear Parent/Guardian:
You should have received communication from transportation services if your child is eligible for school bus services this coming year. If your child does not plan on using school bus services to or from school, we ask that you complete this form as soon as possible. Select "NO" where appropriate.
Knowing how many students will ride the bus helps us to develop the most efficient and cost-effective bus routes.
If you opt out and your student needs to start riding the bus, you can change the form at any time through your SIS ParentVue account. If you do not have a SIS ParentVue account, please contact your child’s school to obtain one. ParentVue accounts are important for keeping up with your child’s attendance, class performance, and other information.
Once you request a change in transportation, it can take up to 10 days to process. If you only need a temporary change, please call and speak to your child’s sub-school administrative assistant about receiving a temporary bus pass.
If your child is not new to FCPS and plans to continue using school bus services, you do not need to complete the form if your student's intent is correct. Your child's intent is currently (intent here). You should have received bus stop information via email prior to or on August 10, 2023. It is also available in ParentVue.
Math Update
Hello Lions! Welcome back, we are looking forward to a wonderful school year. Please note, if you have Geometry or AFDA on your schedule and it reads “Vacancy,” please do not panic! We were not immune to the teacher vacancy/shortage, but the good news is we have identified an experienced teacher who will be joining our team. We thank you for your patience and we will make sure that our students are prepared for the year. We have one of our dedicated teachers who previously worked here at Fairfax HS before retiring, rejoining us this week while our new teacher is coming on board.
School Counselors 23-24

Students’ schedules went live in SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE on August 17th. As a reminder, all schedule changes had to be requested by the last day of school on June 17th. There will be no schedule changes made unless one of the following issues has occurred:
- Too few or too many classes
- Absence of a required course for graduation
- Completion of a summer school course
- Inaccurate placement by grade or course level
- The student has “see counselor” on their schedule
Our hope is for students to find success in the courses they selected with the support of their teachers and counseling staff. We understand that it often takes time for students to adjust and feel comfortable with all of their classes and we want to make sure that we provide that opportunity to all students.

I hope you are having a wonderful summer and I look forward to welcoming you all back later this month.

School Meals

Preparing for and Paying for Meals at School
Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.
Free and Reduced-Price Meals
The application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2023-24 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible for the 2023-24 school year, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
Paying With MySchoolBucks
The best way to purchase meals (and keep food lines moving!) is to use MySchoolBucks. Set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today. Our front office staff can help with any questions.
MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically, as needed. Families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account. Visit FCPS’ Food and Nutrition webpage for more information.
Testing Accommodations
Information for students planning to take PSAT, SAT, or AP exam with accommodations:
Students planning to take the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT10, SAT, or Advanced Placement exams with accommodations (students with IEP or 504 plan) must have accommodations approved by College Board Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD).
