As the summer sizzle heats up, things aren't slowing down here at Fairfax High! We are excitedly gearing up for our next school year. The library will be welcoming a new MAKER SPACE area for students to express creativity and passions.  We will also be creating a FAMILY COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CENTER on site to support all families in strong transitions and building a supportive community. Student camps are underway and there's much excitement seeing both current and future lions connecting around athletics, interests, and our community.

Are you ready to celebrate America's Birthday? Plan to attend the City of Fairfax 4th of July Spectacular on July 2 at Fairfax High School, this is a fun evening of food, music, friends, and fireworks! July 4th is also very exciting as our student groups and staff will participate and be celebrated in the City of Fairfax 4th of July parade.

Have a wonderful weekend and holiday!

Yours in partnership,

Testing Accommodations

Information for students planning to take PSAT, SAT, or AP exam with accommodations

Students planning to take the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT10, SAT, or Advanced Placement exams with accommodations (students with IEP or 504 plan) must have accommodations approved by College Board Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). The approval process can take up to 7-weeks. Please check the college board website for more information about accommodations (www.collegeboard.org). Also, check the upcoming changes to SAT exam digital formatting. Please contact the CollegeBoard representative for more information.

The accommodation request can be submitted on the website or with the school SSD coordinator. The school SSD coordinator is Ms. Milan Sikand (msikand@fcps.edu). It is important to follow the registration and accommodation request deadlines provided on the college board website. Please email Ms. Sikand the following documents to start the request for accommodation:

Do You Have a Student Entering 7th or 12th Grade this Fall?

Immunizations are required for all students entering seventh and 12th grades. Visit this Immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.

Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations. It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines, and 12th grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine.

Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

📝 Tutor.com — Online Tutoring Services During the Summer

tutor.com graphic

FCPS students will continue to have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com during the summer. Students are able to use Tutor.com to review and/or practice in subject areas of interest or need. Students may also choose to access other tools and services such as practice quizzes in a variety of subject areas as well as self-paced study courses for SAT/ACT preparation.

Details about how students can access Tutor.com via archived courses in Schoology are provided in the Tutor.com Summer Access webpage.

🧠 Mental Wellness Summer Supports

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual mental wellness consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  1. Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
  2. Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.

💻 Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy Services for High School Students

Teletherapy services will continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost this summer. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.”

Caregivers must first opt in their students to access Hazel Health. Then, a caregiver or school counselor, social worker, or psychologist can refer the student to Hazel for services. Learn more on the FCPS teletherapy webpage.

💻 Digital PSAT Replaces Paper in 2023-24

This October, the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) will be administered in Fairfax County in a digital format. Some testing accommodations are administered differently for digital tests than for paper/pencil tests. See information about accommodations for students with disabilities.

PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day

The district will offer access to the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day for rising 10th through 12th grade students at no cost to families. Exams will be held at each high school on Wednesday, October 11.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities and English Learners

Because these exams are operated by the College Board, students do not automatically receive testing accommodations or supports. If you have a student with disabilities entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade; or have an English Learner (EL) student entering 12th grade; please review the accommodations request process and/or EL support request process and return forms to the high school by Tuesday, August 8.
