June 16, 2023

Happy Fairfax FINAL Friday of the year,

It is quiet. Too quiet. The students are now  gone and we are already counting down the 65 days until we see them again. WE WILL BE READY TO ROAR!  Until then, we wish you a summer filled with rest, relaxation, reflection, and rejuvenation.

The 2022-2023 school year was AMAZING. I want to thank you for welcoming me into your community and into your school. There is truly something special about this place we call Fairfax High School. Our students have risen to every occasion and have achieved so many awards, accolades,  and accomplishments this year. Our staff have remained tirelessly committed to student success, student support, and student  achievement. Our parents and community have offered unwavering love and support in ensuring students thrived  in academics, athletics, and activities. THIS IS FAIRFAX!

This was another week packed with ACTION and EXCITING news! Fairfax County Public Schools recognized Daniel Miller as the FCPS TEACHER OF THE YEAR. With his focus on standards-based grading, classroom inclusivity, and highly engaging pedagogy; he was the obvious choice. We are very proud of him and his impact on students, staff, and learning.

Monday night, Fairfax High School attended the Cappies and had numerous nominations for their production of Sister Act. Congratulations to all of our nominees, our FHS Theater Marketing Team won the CAPPIE for marketing and promotion. We continue to thrive and showcase our talents and our commitments to the arts.

Tuesday night, our PTSA recognized our student service award winners and hosted a delightful end of the year celebration filled with tributes, retirements, and reflection. Thank you to all of our parents for your continued support and collaboration.

Thursday afternoon,  we said goodbye to some of our own Lions who have dedicated their careers to teaching and Fairfax high School. We thank them for their commitment, dedication, and excellence.

Friday, we sign off. Classrooms are packed. The lights are dimming. The sounds of summer are settling in. This is not goodbye, simply SEE YOU SOON!

Every Student, Every Strength, Every Day here at Fairfax High.

Yours in partnership,

David Greene named Yearbook Adviser of the Month for May 2023

Yearbook Adviser David Greene

Congrats to David Greene, for being identified as Yearbook Adviser of the Month for the DMV Herff Jones Yearbook Office for May 2023!

Before the 2022 school year ended, Mr. Greene hit the ground running by joining the previous adviser at distribution. He took his 2023 editorial staff to yearbook camp in July 2023. They put plans in place and focused on improving their theme, design and overall coverage of students in this year's book. Not only did they succeed in meeting their goals, they went above and beyond in improving the yearbook.

In just one year, Mr. Greene has grown and improved the yearbook program successfully.  The classroom culture he creates for his yearbook staff encourages the students to work hard and enjoy the yearbook process. He empowers his student leaders and coaches them for success.  Fairfax High School is lucky to have Mr. Greene as a teacher and a yearbook adviser. Congratulations!

Information for students planning to take PSAT, SAT, or AP exam with accommodations

Students planning to take the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT10, SAT, or Advanced Placement exams with accommodations (students with IEP or 504 plan) must have accommodations approved by College Board Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). The approval process can take up to 7-weeks. Please check the college board website for more information about accommodations (www.collegeboard.org). Also, check the upcoming changes to SAT exam digital formatting. Please contact the CollegeBoard representative for more information.

The accommodation request can be submitted on the website or with the school SSD coordinator. The school SSD coordinator is Ms. Milan Sikand (msikand@fcps.edu). It is important to follow the registration and accommodation request deadlines provided on the college board website. Please email Ms. Sikand the following documents to start the request for accommodation:

Do You Have a Student Entering 7th or 12th Grade this Fall?

Immunizations are required for all students entering seventh and 12th grades. Visit this Immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.

Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations. It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines, and 12th grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine.

Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

🧠 Mental Wellness Summer Supports

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual mental wellness consultations from June 26 to August 4. Any FCPS parent or secondary student can schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  1. Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
  2. Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Consultations can be requested online or by calling 703-503-2520 and leaving a message.

💻 Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy Services for High School Students

Teletherapy services will continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost this summer. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.”

💻 Digital PSAT Replaces Paper in 2023-24

This October, the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) will be administered in Fairfax County in a digital format. Some testing accommodations are administered differently for digital tests than for paper/pencil tests. See information about accommodations for students with disabilities.

PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day

The district will offer access to the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day for rising 10th through 12th grade students at no cost to families. Exams will be held at each high school on Wednesday, October 11.
