Dear Roadrunners
The National Weather Service has noted the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has issued a Code ORANGE Air Quality Alert in our area for tomorrow, Wednesday, 6/7/23.
A Code Orange Air Quality Alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors. Sensitive groups should avoid prolonged activities outdoors.
Weather services are forecasting that the air quality will be worse in the afternoon, with the potential of Code Red air quality which is unhealthy for all groups. Should a code Red be issued, All outdoor physical activity should be suspended between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm: no outdoor recess, no outdoor physical education activities, no outdoor sports activities, no outdoor marching band practice, and no grounds mowing operations (FCPS and contractor operations). Additionally, all FCPS employees should curtail the fueling of gasoline powered vehicles/maintenance equipment during the day.
It is anticipated that the Code Orange Alert will remain in effect through Thursday and possibly Friday as well. It is attributed to the record setting wild fires in Canada. OSS’s Ozone Fact Sheet provides additional guidance specifically related to Code Red alerts.
Lorton Station will coordinate with health services to determine if we can continue Field Day activities as scheduled or need to postpone Field Day to next week. Lorton Station will notify families regarding a decision.
