From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

It's hard to believe that we have one more full week of school left! It has absolutely been a memorable year!

We do not want the school year to end without a HUGE thank you to our PTA board and PTA members. We are tremendously grateful for our 2022-2023 PTA board member. If you see them around, please extend your gratitude to them: Rachana Garg (President) Katresha Bailey (VP of Programs), JaMelle McNally (VP of Fundraising) , Shannon Coleman (Treasurer), and Stephanie Bloom (secretary).

We are so very proud of our music department for the amazing performances of our students in the band, chorus, and strings concerts. The students all sounded wonderful under the direction of Dwight Fontenot, Leah Hellier, Signe Mortensen, Rachel Plumer, and Smith Waylett. It was such a great honor to have Ms. Mortensen recognized Tuesday night by the Fairfax Arts Coalition for Education (FACE) for her accomplishments as the recipient of the Outstanding New Orchestra Teacher award. This award is given to teachers in their first 5 years of teaching. Congratulations, Signe!

As we look into the last week of school, we have a few events that families may want to attend. The LHES talent show will be held tomorrow, June 8, at 6pm in the cafeteria. June 15 is the 6th grade promotion, 6pm at South County Middle School (gym). There will be a 6th grade parade on the last day of school, June 16, at 2pm. Sixth grade parents are welcome to spectate this event, arriving by 1:50pm.

The data from our 3rd-6th grade SOL assessments is reflective of the hard work of our staff and students. We are happy to share this data with our families. Please see the graph below of our academic success.

Lastly, your input for class placement for the upcoming school year is valued, and we would like to provide families the opportunity to share information about your child(ren) that would support learning. It is impossible to honor every request as we remain equitable in our process, AND we will certainly be intentional to ensure the best class placement for your student(s). We welcome you to use this form to provide your input for the 2023-2024 school year.

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal

FCPS News:

Student Testing Results Coming Soon

Starting in late May, caregivers will receive reports for assessments their students completed this spring. Not sure what assessments your student took this year? A list of tests by grade level is available. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE, by mail, or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Some families will also receive a Virginia’s Visualization and Analytics Solution (VVAAS) Student Assessment Summary report with historical Standards of Learning (SOL) test results from 2015-2022.

Go online or contact your student's school for additional information about student assessments.

🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!

It’s a busy time of year, and we know there are many priorities on families’ plates. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important for families to remember to check their students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families who earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2023-24 school year will be available near the end of August.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2022-23 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price lunch.

If you are interested in helping to relieve lunch debt for families currently going through the FRM application process, please donate to Educate Fairfax.

Online Campus Summer Registration Closing Soon!

Registration for taking a summer class with the Online Campus will close Friday, June 9. Email OnlineCampus@fcps.edu or call 703-503-7781 with any questions.

Registration for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology’s Middle School Technology Institute (MSTI) also closes on Friday, June 9.

Other Summer Learning Opportunities

Registration is still available for Institute for the Arts (IFTA) and Elementary-IFTA (E-IFTA) arts camps, Credit Recovery Academy, and  CyberPatriot Summer Cyber Camp.

Juneteenth

Monday, June 19, is a holiday for FCPS employees. Schools and offices will be closed. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that word of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, effectively marking the end of slavery in the United States. Learn more about Juneteenth.

💪 Let's Finish the School Year Strong!

Student attendance at school is important all year long, up to the last day of school. Attendance has an effect on student performance and on school accreditation. See how to:

  • Check your child’s attendance record.
  • Help your student stay engaged at school.
  • Report future absences.
  • Understand the FCPS school calendar.
