Thoreau Matters

June 2, 2023

Dear Thoreau Families,

June is finally here and our students have had so many opportunities to demonstrate their growth and achievement this year. It is exciting to see the incredible progress each child makes over the course of a school year, and I love the numerous occasions to mark achievements and accomplishments. Footloose the Musical opened up last night with rave reviews and we have performances tonight and tomorrow if you are able to attend (tickets can be purchased below). Next week our band, choir, and orchestra students will get to showcase their progress during their final concerts and we are really looking forward to these nights!

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed and discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

As we enter these last two weeks of school, I cannot stress enough how proud we are of our students for their dedication to their goals. We are also grateful to our staff and families for their commitment to supporting our community.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki

Principal

Expunge Option for All Middle School Students Enrolled in a High School Credit-Bearing Course

In accordance with Virginia state regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high school  credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be omitted from the student's high school transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course. Guidelines and the procedures for expunging grades for high school courses taken in middle school can be found here.  Please return all forms to your assigned counselor at Thoreau Middle School so we are able to assist you in processing this request and to ensure your child is registered for the appropriate course in the 2023-2024 school year.

FOOTLOOSE: THE MUSICAL YOUTH EDITION

yu

Based on the 1980’s hit musical film, Footloose will explode with singing and dancing  on the Thoreau stage, June 1-3rd.

Last year we sold out all shows, so be sure to get your tickets ahead of time via the QR code or www.thoreaudrama.com

Tickets are $12 and make sure to bring cash for concessions and Break A Leg O Grams for the cast and crew.

Saturday, June 3 at the 7pm performance there will be a 360 Photo Booth for the audience to experience!

Come support the 7th and 8th graders of Thoreau and enjoy an afternoon/evening toe tapping and singing the classic songs like “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” all the way home!

PE Uniform Donations

The PE team has received many requests about donating Thoreau PE uniforms since 8th graders will not need them next year. June 8 through June 16, students can donate their Thoreau PE uniforms during their PE class. After June 16, all donated uniforms should be dropped off at the main office. These uniforms will be used as Loaner uniforms next year for students who forget to bring their PE uniform that day.

If you have any questions, please email Kevin Long @kmlong@fcps.edu.

We appreciate your donations!

Sports Health Screening Night

The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical (PPE) on Monday June 5, 2023 from 5:30-8 pm.  Our team physicians and certified athletic trainers will be on hand to provide a thorough screening including a postural exam, flexibility evaluation, and information regarding what each of those assessments mean.  If, during the screening or physical the physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking for a donation of $50 for the PPE.  To pre-register for a PPE, go to: 2023 Athletic Physical Registration   and follow the links to Athletic Physicals (PPE).  The link is now active.  You can also find a link to the new Physical form at that site.Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we ask for a $60 donation at that time. You can pay for the PPE through my school bucks at the following link: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/stores/catalog/getproduct?requestAction=ViewAll&clientKey=ZZI5ZQWBKS04NJ8&productGroupKey=ZZIOEEZJBP0RROF&view=&productKey=ZZ5QPAELMZYWA2U

If your son or daughter is thinking of playing a sport, he/she will need to have a VHSL pre-participation examination (PPE) completed on the official VHSL physical form.  This exam must be dated after May 1, 2023 in order for your son/daughter to be eligible to participate on any team, including pre-season conditioning.  The physical exam on page 3 must be completed and signed by a physician, a nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant (MD, NP, PA, or DO).
