1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

Memorial Day weekend often is the first marker of a highly anticipated summer. It is also a time to remember those who were lost in our nation's wars.  I wish all of our Charger families a wonderful long weekend.

Here are a few highlights of connections in our Charger community this week:

Wellness Fair: On Wednesday of this week we hosted our first schoolwide Wellness Fair during Learning Seminar/Charger Time.  All students and staff had many opportunities to take a break, connect with one another, and focus on self care. Students engaged in outdoor activities such as pickle ball, soccer, corn hole, and spike ball or walking the track. Art activities included sun printing, bracelet and slime making and coloring. Many students chose to be outside and gather with friends while listening to music. We have received rave reviews from students and staff on this event and look forward to making it a more frequent part of our schedule next school year to continue to promote health and wellness.

Students:

  • Senior Sunset BBQ was a HUGE success earlier this week. Members of our Class of 2023 enjoyed dinner, outdoor games, and just being together to celebrate the end of their time at Chantilly. We had a great turnout and are very grateful to all the staff and parent volunteers who supported the event.
  • Congratulations to our Chantilly Choirs who presented an outstanding Spring Pops Concert this week. I continue to be in awe of the talent and confidence displayed by so many of our students and staff.  Our choirs shared a variety of pop hits and classic songs, as well as many solos and group performances to highlight their musical growth throughout this year.
  • Our Math Club is hosting a math competition for students in grades 4-8 tonight, May 26. It was a pleasure visiting with our amazing leaders who love sharing their passion and talents in the area of mathematics and hear their ideas for fostering a love of math in others.

Staff:

  • Our staff is working together to plan for the 23-24 school year, which is truly right around the corner. We are focused on enhancing faculty collaboration, refreshing schoolwide expectations, and examining our instructional and grading practices. I am grateful for the leadership of our Instructional Council and appreciate learning alongside of them daily.
  • Check out the great article about Chantilly Teacher Luc Nguyen in FCPS news below.

Community:

  • It was my honor to partner with our staff and community members including our military service academies and ROTC programs, non and for-profit businesses to recognize and award scholarships and highlight honor graduates of the Class of 2023 during Convocation.
  • Be sure to take a look at our last installment for Student Successes below!
  • I am looking forward to making many more Charger Connections in the coming weeks!  I hope to see you at CHS very soon.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations. Chantilly Teacher Realizes Dream

Mr. Luc Nguyen knew in kindergarten that he wanted to become a teacher. Although he applied to districts across Northern Virginia, there was something about Chantilly High School and FCPS that felt like the right fit. 2.  Students Leaving FCPS Should Download Their Files

When students leave FCPS, their FCPS Google Workspace account will be automatically deactivated.  All students graduating or leaving FCPS for another school district must save their work.

Once a student account is deactivated, students will not be able to login to your FCPS Google account or access any files saved in Google Drive.

It is important that you download any files before last day of school. Instructions for downloading Google data are on the Google Workspace Information for Students and Parents page of the FCPS website.

Your student may also have work stored in other places - for example, designs created in Canva, graphic organizers created in Lucidchart, flashcards created in Pear Deck or another tech tool used at school. Most of these platforms allow students to download work in another format.

Student access to instructional technology tools that use “Sign in with Google” will end when the FCPS Google Workspace account is deactivated.

Students can check which apps and services use “Sign in with Google” in their FCPS Google Workspace account by following these steps:

  1. Go to Manage your Google Account
  2. Select Security.
  3. Under “Signing in to other sites,” select Signing in with Google.
  4. Under “Signing in with Google” is a list of third-party apps or services using sign in with Google.

3.  Student Assessment Results

Starting in late May, caregivers will receive reports for assessments their students completed this spring. Not sure what assessments your student took this year? A list of tests by grade level is available. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE, by mail, or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Some families will also receive a Virginia’s Visualization and Analytics Solution (VVAAS) Student Assessment Summary report with historical Standards of Learning (SOL) test results from 2015-2022.

Go online or contact your student's school for additional information about student assessments.

Recent Student Successes this week!

5.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  Dr. Goodloe meets with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • I have Mohammed Ali in 2 classes this year. He has been working not only on learning the content of the courses but the soft skills, as well. He has strong communication and interaction skills and has worked hard on his time management and prioritizing skills this year. These will serve him well throughout his life! Mohammed it has been a pleasure to have you in class this year.  Ms. Cindy Belsky
  • Basimah Basharat has made great strides in learning this semester. She has done an outstanding job on recent assignments and I know she will continue to grow and impress next year!  Mr. Todd Whitesell
  • I have selected Kiara Berzi as my choice for the Technology & Engineering Education Program’s 4th quarter Student Success recipient. Kiara is a student in my STEM Design class and as we have progressed through the year, she has maintained high standards and a positive work ethic.  In the STEM Design class, as we move through the different units, students typically show a greater interest and work harder in certain ones. Their quality of work and the amount of time that they spend on activities will vary based on their interests. This has not been the case with Kiara. She has shown a genuine interest in all the different units of study. She is always focused and she puts forth her best effort for each and every assignment.  I have enjoyed having Kiara in class this year! Keep up the good work, Kiara!  Ms. Sue Chudovan
  • Anastasia Hayes is in the top 1% of students in Introduction to Marketing. She has been a leader and mentor in her class. Her assignments are always creative, detailed, and connected to current marketing trends. I look forward to viewing her work! Anastasia is a delight to talk with and is always attentive in class. I will miss her next year and look forward to seeing her succeed at CHS this next few years!  Ms Jennifer Piotrowski
  • Samantha McMahan had been solid all school year in my class and she did a phenomenal job on her final project! Great job Samantha.  Mr. Phil Leger
  • Rahul Ponugoti has significantly improved his assessment grades and work ethic in Comp Gov. He has also been proactive in seeking out due dates.  Ms. Brittanye Mohrbacher
  • Darlin Rodriguez Medina is a pleasure to have in class. She often finishes her work early and then supports other students around her. She is a great collaborator and her growth in such a short time is amazing.  Ms. Courtney Marshall
  • Keenan Tjahjana is a devoted worker at his current internship. He has not only been a star student in the STEP program, he has also worked on getting his associates degree in bookkeeping during the year. He was recognized at his current internship as well. Stay awesome Keenan!  Ms. Kirsten Hassan

5.  Celebrations in our Community-May Observances

    • Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
    • Mental Health Awareness Month
    • Jewish American Heritage Month
    • Better Speech Month
    • National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
