1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

Kudos to all of our students, families, and staff for navigating a modified schedule and supporting one another as we moved into SOL and end of course testing this week. Students have done a great job and we are appreciative of your support.

It has been a great week of connections at Chantilly HS. A few of the highlights:

Academy Awards: Congratulations and thank you to all of our students, staff, and families in the Chantilly Governor's STEM Academy who were recognized at the Academy Awards earlier this week. It was inspiring to be present to hear the outstanding accomplishments including scholarships awarded, professional certifications achieved, and post-secondary plans. The Academy Awards was truly a celebration of Portrait of a Graduate in action. I was struck by the comments of one of our Academy Faculty, Mr. Aberle who shared, "we do not become ourselves by ourselves".  The community strength, care and collaboration is evident in the Chantilly Academy and in our Charger community.

Students:

  • Every Friday, I have the opportunity to recognize students who have been nominated by their teachers and staff who work closely with them, for their growth, resilience and perseverance. Recent Student Successes (listed below) is just one of the many ways that our Chantilly staff shows they care for our students.
  • On Wednesday I attended our Combatting Intolerance class and participated in a Student Forum where students shared concerns, questions, and advocated how to best support all students in our community.  I was able to share with them information about the FCPS Tip Line and additional resources for reporting concerns. My biggest takeaway was that Chantilly is a community that CARES about the wellbeing and connectedness of each student. We are looking forward to building on that belief.

Staff:

  • This week we have supported one another through proctoring tests and changing schedules.  We are continuing to develop connections with all faculty through smaller scale meetings as we plan for the 23-24 school year. As we share and reflect on feedback and data shared by staff, key words that stand out as assets: Community, Students, Colleagues, Support.
  • Congratulations to Mr. Luc Nguyen, who was recognized as the DMV Yearbook Advisor of the month!  We are so proud of him and excited for the entire Chantilly Yearbook staff who shared our yearbook with the Charger community this week.

Community:

  • Thank you to Ms. Ko and our Korean students for their fantastic Korean Cultural Night performance at Lees Corner ES. The evening included both traditional and modern performances and highlights of Korean culture. It was a fantastic evening!
  • It was wonderful to see several new faces at our PTSA meeting this week.  One way the PTSA is looking to enhance communication and connections is through a new Instagram account.  More information to follow!

I am looking forward to making many more Charger Connections in the coming weeks!  I hope to see you at CHS very soon.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations. You can do that through e-mail (atgoodloe@fcps.edu), call 703-222-8100, or through the form located here. Please remember that if you do not include your information on the form, I will not be able to follow-up.

4.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  Dr. Goodloe meets with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • We’re really proud of Nicholas (Nick) Donner - he has made a lot of progress in STEP this quarter. Nick has been working very hard at both of his job sites. He consistently demonstrates a positive attitude, and he has been more confident when communicating with his co-workers. Every day, Nick gives full effort into completing all of his job tasks!  Ms. Kristin Dreyer
  • Josiah Fields has made excellent progress in the STEP program this year. He has worked successfully at two different jobs, one of which has even offered him paid employment. Josiah is a dedicated worker who is always smiling, and he consistently displays a positive work ethic. Even though this is Josiah's first year in the program, he consistently serves as a role model to the other students with his positivity and dedication to his job.  Ms. Erin Foster
  • In his third and final year in Chantilly High School’s Secondary Transition to Employment Program, Shon Gore worked as an at his worksites, wherein he demonstrated himself to be hardworking, dedicated, and reliable. His work as a stocker/recovery specialist which resulted in the manager and head cashier describing him as “the best” and communicating their desire to “hire him on the spot.” Similarly, his precise work in his 2nd position had the project host so impressed that he is not only advancing a plan to offer Shon paid employment to continue his work over the summer, but also considering ways that compensation for the Artificial Intelligence project can be extended to other interested interns whose work is as impressive. We are proud of Shon for what he has done this year in opening doors and positively representing our program.  Ms. Mariann Gibson
  • Sameera Gorthy worked so hard during the second semester to make up her oral and written comprehension in French 4. Her extra effort to listen to podcasts and read in French paid off as she aced her oral summative and she even saw the difference in her ability to recall needed vocabulary.  Ms. JoEllen Delamatta
  • Asaad Kargbo, I am so happy with how you've been engaged in our class recently! Your growth and abilities in French are really progressing. Great job and keep it up!  Ms. Elaine Gonzalez
  • Excellent work in French 2 throughout the year always helping classmates and being ready to ask questions. Arushi Surve, you inspire others with your thirst to learn!  Ms. JoEllen Delamatta

5.  Celebrations in our Community-May Observances

    • Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
    • Mental Health Awareness Month
    • Jewish American Heritage Month
