Dear Parents and Caregivers,
A heartfelt thank you goes to the PTA and parents who showered the staff of Langston Hughes Middle School with treats every day of Teacher Appreciation Week. The staff enjoyed items for all palettes! We appreciate your supporting our staff and school.
Today we kicked off SOL testing with the 8th Grade Science Test. Next week all students take the Reading SOL on Tuesday and their math SOL on Thursday. Please ensure students charge their laptops, get a good night sleep and breakfast, and that they arrive on time to school. We anticipate great results on the tests which will demonstrate their dedication to their studies this year.

Anna Panjwani, Student at Langston Hughes Middle, Named Promising Young Writer
Reston, VA, May 2, 2023, Anna Panjwani, from Langston Hughes Middle School, has been recognized as a 2023 Promising Young Writer by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
The Promising Young Writers Program represents NCTE’s commitment to early and continuing work in the development of writing. The school-based writing program was established in 1985 to stimulate and recognize writing talents and to emphasize the importance of writing skills among eighth-grade students. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate students.
This year, schools nominated hundreds of students to participate in the Promising Young Writers Program. Of those, 56 were selected to receive the First-Class designation, 58 received the Superior designation, 27 received the Excellent designation, and 5 received the Merit designation. Two to three independent judges evaluated each submission holistically on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style

Attendance Matters – Attend Today and Achieve Tomorrow!
Attending school every day is critical to students reaching their full potential. Showing up to school regularly helps students engage in learning that builds proficiency in reading and math that will help them to graduate from high school. Students who attend school regularly do better academically in middle school and are more likely to graduate from high school when they miss less than a week of school each semester. Attend today and achieve tomorrow!
Counselor Corner
This week in Connections students reviewed SOL study tips and test taking strategies. Next Monday we will turn our attention back to career exploration. Students will take a career interest inventory and learn about various career pathways. We encourage parents and caregivers to discuss this career unit with their students and to share their own career journey.
Social-Emotional Screener
Students took the Spring Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in March.
Spring SEL Screener results will be mailed home to families in mid-May.
This website includes both the Parent Report as well as a Family Guide to support you in understanding results and ideas for talking with your student about their results. Both are available in multiple languages. To learn more about SEL and how we support students at school and at home please see the FCPS SEL website. Please reach out to your student’s school counselor if you have any questions or concerns.
Last Day for Late Buses
The last day for after school programs and late buses is Wednesday, May 31st. Parent pickup is required for students who stay after school with a teacher beyond that date.

Drug
Additives to Be Aware of: Xylazine (Trang)
In our continuing efforts to educate the community, we have been tracking a new trend in the region known as xylazine or tranq. Tranq, a non-opioid tranquilizer, is often mixed with other drugs giving the user a fentanyl-like high for an extended period. Considering the rise in opioid-related overdoses, it is important to know about various additives such as fentanyl and tranq that can be mixed in, unbeknownst to the user. Xylazine is an animal tranquilizer which is not approved by the FDA for human consumption. It affects the central nervous system by suppressing breathing and slowing down vital functions in the body. Tranq has recently been detected in several fatal overdoses related to cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl in unsuspecting users. Narcan/Naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medication, will not reverse the overdose in a person who has taken tranq thus resulting in potential death. Continued use has resulted in lesions, ulcers, and other health related issues resulting in loss of limbs from untreated abscesses.
While alarming, education is key to keep our communities safe. Here is some recent data showing the trend in our region. Xylazine was present in 19% of drug overdoses in Maryland in 2020 alone; with trends increasing in Pennsylvania by 26% and in Connecticut by 10%. In areas of higher populations, xylazine has been present in 1 of every 5 deaths that have been reported. According to the Centers for Disease Control, xylazine was present in 64.3 % of deaths when it was detected. 38 states including the District of Columbia have seen a rise in tranq in and around their communities.
