May 12, 2023
We have had an exciting week focused on Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning. Mr. Smolinski's Geospatial Class presented culminating projects based on problems and solutions, research analysis, and geospatial mapping. We have students planning running routes for exercise, finding the prime location for the next MLB team, planning to propose increased homeless shelters and food security locations, and increasing public transportation routes based on areas of need. With work like this happening in our classrooms it offers a guaranteed certainty that students will be college ready and that our future civic leaders are motivated. We also held our final Choral and Band concerts which at times can serve as the ultimate POL for students. The talent and growth that is witnessed from Fall to Spring, and in four years, is truly tremendous and our Senior musicians and vocalists will be missed.
This week concludes our two-week AP testing window. Although stressful, it was exciting to watch students leave their AP testing sites feeling very confident that they were prepared to tackle the test, earn the score and the college credit! We celebrate our teachers and students who have put in the hard work. I am elated to share that this year we gave 540 MORE AP exams than we did last year, this is a commitment to our culture of building and increasing opportunities for all learners. GET READY - SOLs begin on Monday, so we will continue offering testing supports to all of our LIONS.
Today we celebrated our Portrait of a Graduate and Lions on the Rise Nominees. This celebration is always exciting as 100 nominees and their families come together and celebrate academic growth and skill success. Students were honored for embracing the art of communication and collaboration, for being ethical citizens and true problem solvers within our greater community, and for setting, planning, and achieving short- and long-term goals.
I wish all of our community a weekend filled with rest and rejuvenation. I am sending a Mother's Day greeting to everyone who serves or has served in a maternal capacity to someone - WE THANK YOU.
Every Student, Every Strength, Every Day here at Fairfax High.
Yours in partnership,
Mrs. Hanson's students are ready for their AP test!!
Calendar Reminders: Jewish American Heritage Month; National School Nurse Day
May is a national month of recognition of the history of Jewish contributions to American culture, acknowledging the diverse achievement of the Jewish community in the U.S. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
🩺 National School Nurse Day
Today is National School Nurse Day. It's the perfect time to recognize the many contributions school nurses make to student health and learning.
Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates the role of school public health nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. They are advocates who bridge healthcare and education by supporting student health and readiness to learn. School nurses are essential to our community and work tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of their students.
Please join us in thanking PHNs for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students!
