Dear Cub Run Families,

Many, many thanks to our wonderful PTA and Cub Run families who showered appreciation on our staff last week! Another shout-out to Kindergarten teacher Ms. Brittany Cummings and her 6th grade Photography Club students who showcased their Photo Gallery last Friday! This was the first year that the PTA sponsored this club, and it was such a success. If you missed the event, look for the photos at the 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony next month!

It's been a busy month of May so far with outdoor learning activities, indoor planting, building robots with recyclable materials, and more!

The Cub Run PTA Needs You!

At Cub Run, the PTA is amazing! Our PTA Board features 28 members who run events like the Spelling Bee, Spring Fling, and Science Fair, arrange after-school activities like chess club and art, or manage our numerous grant programs. As the year ends, there are several open positions in need of new volunteers. PTA core leadership roles (president, treasurer, secretary, and vice president positions) must pass a general membership vote, which will be held this month on May 16. Other chair roles can be filled between now and August 1. If you are interested in taking on any of our open positions please contact cubrunptapresident@gmail.com as soon as possible. For more information about the PTA board, check out https://www.cubrunpta.org/contact.html.

Seeking Families' Input for the 23-24 School Year

It's time to start thinking about class groupings for our cubbies for the 2023-24 school year! We value families' input in this process and ask that you fill out this form by this Friday, May 12, to let us know if your student will be returning to Cub Run next year. For those who are planning to return, there is an option on the form to tell us more about the type of learning environment that best serves your child, as well as any other considerations for us to keep in mind as we create class groupings for next year. We ask that families not make requests for specific teachers.

Spring 2023 SOL Schedule

Below is the Cub Run Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) dates for students in grades 3-6. Please be sure that your student is well rested and in school for their scheduled assessments.

Social Emotional Learning Screener Reports

Twice a year, students in grades 3-12 share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed through the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

Spring 2023 SEL Screener results will be mailed to families in mid-May. The Social Emotional Learning Screener Parent/Guardian Report and Guide has been updated to better reflect how SEL Screener results are used to support school and districtwide planning, in addition to supports for individual students. Visit the FCPS SEL Screener webpage for information in multiple languages, including tips for talking with your student about the report and strategies for strengthening SEL at home.

사회 정서 학습 Screener(스크리너/관찰) 보고서

Update Contact Information in weCare@School

Within SIS ParentVUE, Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system. weCare helps manage contact and emergency medical information by allowing parents/caregivers to enter and update their children’s data online.

That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive critical updates from the district and their child’s school through the eNotify system. FCPS uses eNotify to communicate emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closing and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent by email, text, and occasionally by phone. Learn more about updating your emergency care information.

An Update on ESSER Funding, and the Proposal for 2023-24

In the fall of 2021, FCPS received $188.8 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding to support the safe operation of schools and address the impacts of COVID-19 on students.

Last week, Sloan Presidio, FCPS’ chief academic officer, presented the proposed ESSER expenditures for the 2023-24 school year, the last year of ESSER funding. This funding is in addition to the FCPS operating budget and is specifically targeting the impacts of COVID-19.

The proposed plan presented at the recent School Board Meeting is intended to maximize the dollars remaining in our funding. At least 20% of the funding must be spent toward unfinished learning. The proposed plan has nearly 80% of ESSER funds allocated to support student learning needs. Read more about the plan.
