Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to take this time to recognize and appreciate our fabulous staff at Oak Hill!  As you know, our teachers, specialists, instructional assistants, itinerants, assistant principal, custodians, food workers and office staff work hard every day to support the students at Oak Hill.  Their day doesn’t end at dismissal.  They are taking professional development classes to learn new instructional strategies, they are meeting in collaborative learning teams to plan instruction or discussing students who are needing more opportunities to learn standards.  Many are firing up their computers at home to assess student work in Google Classroom or to work virtually with teachers across the county to collaborate on lessons together.  But don’t forget that each evening the mom and dad hats have to go on as well!

So, I ask that you pause for a moment and let someone at Oak Hill know what it is that you have recognized and appreciated this school year.  One thank you goes a long way!  And finally thank you to our wonderful PTA and all the parents who donated items or sent a monetary donation to be used this week.  The Oak Hill teachers and I are so appreciative for the thoughtfulness shown this week.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Thank you, Parents and PTA

Summer Book Exchange

picture of books

The Summer Book Exchange is a fun event where students swap gently used books. It will be held during school hours on June 6 and 7. Books are being collected now through Monday, June 5. Students may bring in gently used books, leave them in the Summer Book Exchange bins (located by the front office and kiss-and-ride entrance), and take a receipt good for an equal number of books (up to 15 books per child). Please tell your kids to take only one receipt and write the total number of donated books on it. On June 5 and 6, each class will have a chance to go to the book exchange with their receipt and “shop” for their selections. We welcome book donations, especially for Grades 4-6. And we also need volunteers to help us with this event. Volunteer now at our SignUpGenius page. If you have any questions about this event, please contact Tara Finnerty at tfinn2011@live.com.

Cafeteria Menu Change

Picture of lunch

For the last 2 weeks of school, (starting on June 5th), only cold bagged lunches will be offered in the cafeteria at lunchtime. The hot food line and the salad bar will be shut down due to the kitchen renovation that is occurring this summer.  Breakfast will continue to be offered (cold items only).  The menu will be published soon.

Social Emotional Learning Screener Reports

Twice a year, students in grades 3-12 share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed through the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

Spring 2023 SEL Screener results will be mailed to families in mid-May. The Social Emotional Learning Screener Parent/Guardian Report and Guide has been updated to better reflect how SEL Screener results are used to support school and districtwide planning, in addition to supports for individual students. Visit the FCPS SEL Screener webpage for information in multiple languages, including tips for talking with your student about the report and strategies for strengthening SEL at home.
