1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

We have had a fantastic week at Chantilly High School. A few highlights of connections this week:

Students:

  • Congratulations to our AVID (Advancement Via Individual
Determination) students and staff for a special Crossover event this week. Our seniors shared their reflections on the impact of the program on their future educational and career aspirations and we welcomed our incoming new students to the program. Together our families shared community time together with our students playing Scattergories. What an awesome way to build relationships and connections.
  • Over the past several weeks I have enjoyed participating in interviews with our media staff of Purple Tide and Knightly News about schoolwide goals, initiatives, and plans for the coming school year. I am impressed with the outstanding Portrait of a Graduate skills on display by our students.
  • I am so proud of our students across grade levels, departments and in the Academy for their commitment to excellence.  They have demonstrated outstanding performance on VA State board exams, industry certifications and AP assessments this week with many more to come.

Staff:

  • May is testing season and our staff has been busy teaching, training, proctoring, and supporting students to do their best on AP, SOL and other exams, while maintaining our regular schedule. Thank you!
  • Congratulations to the following Chantilly Staff members who will be recognized at the SEPTA (Special Education PTA) awards this weekend:  Mandy Burke, Nick Thayer, Rich Sarhanis, Kristen Fennel and Kara Hayden.  Thank you for your amazing work and support of our students.

Community:

  • As regular season play wraps up for spring sports, it was wonderful to celebrate our class of 2023 at Senior Nights this week for Boys Soccer, Baseball and later this evening, Boys Lacrosse. I know I share in the pride of our families as they recognize our student athletes' many contributions to the Charger community. Thank you families for your support and time volunteering!
  • Don't miss out on our Theater performances this weekend of the Fairytale Peace Program Friday 7:00pm, Saturday 11:00am and 2:00pm, Auditorium
  • Thank you to our partners in the US Park Police for sharing about service as a Mounted Park Police officer with our Criminal Justice Students. We loved meeting Mo the police horse!

I am looking forward to making many more Charger Connections in the coming weeks!  I hope to see you at CHS very soon.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations. You can do that through e-mail (atgoodloe@fcps.edu), call 703-222-8100, or through the form located here. Please remember that if you do not include your information on the form, I will not be able to follow-up.

2.  Community Conversation: School Safety and Security

FCPS will host a community conversation to discuss our approach to safety and security, and the work we do every day to keep our schools safe. Join us Monday, May 8, 6:30-7:30 p.m., at South Lakes High School. Register for the Community Conversation.

FCPS staff and experts will review our risk assessment processes, the physical measures we already have in place to protect our students and staff, pilot programs to detect vaping, and how we communicate and collaborate with our partners when there is an incident at our schools.

3.  Recognitions

Kudos to the CHS Girl's Lacrosse team (photo below) who helped Food for Neighbors last weekend. They carried and transported 3 van loads of food from the sorting site at Centreville HS to the pantry at CHS. The Centreville/Chantilly area collected 2,231 pounds of food from 178 homes. Food from this collection is distributed to the CHS, CVHS and Stone MS food pantry programs.  Links for signing up to be a donor and volunteer opportunities can be found at:

4.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  Dr. Goodloe meets with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Angelina Rubi Cisneros comes to class with a smile and desire to learn. She really does try to stay in the moment and practice her perseverance and resilience skills. Rubi, you are doing a great job each and every day!, Ms. Michele Gates
  • Lily Edwards has been working extremely hard in Chemistry and has shown a huge improvement. Our most recent unit was quite challenging, and Lily learned the content well enough to help her peers. Keep up the great work, Lily!  Ms. Allison Maher
  • Amy Hong has consistently excelled in her coursework this year. She is incredibly hard working and cares so much about learning and growing. I am honored to have her as a student this year and can't wait to see what she achieves in the future.  Ms. Nicole Abba
  • Pranav Konduru has been a hard worker in AP Bio all year. He takes time on his assignments to understand material, and always has a positive attitude in class.  Ms. Kaitlyn Shrestha
  • Sakina Tahir has recently revamped the way she prepares for assessments, and it shows in her results! She also does a wonderful job during group presentations - always prepared and sharing what she knows. She is a delight to have in class.  Ms. Anne Fenton
