Staff Appreciation Week BBQ

1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

We have had a wonderful week at Chantilly focusing on sharing our gratitude for the great work of all of our staff members and on self-care and wellness. If you haven't had a chance to ask your students about our furry visitors that were here earlier in the week, be sure to do so. Students and staff truly enjoyed the break outside and engaging with therapy animals. Due to weather we had to reschedule our school-wide wellness fair for May, which will be a wonderful break from testing season for our students and staff. Thank you to our PTSA for supporting Staff Appreciation Week with daily treats and raffle prizes that show how much the community cares for our Charger Staff.

As we continue to assess how to enhance communication with the community, we are trying out several new tools to share key information with our students staff and families. This week we initiated a "Chantilly Events" email that will serve to share weekly athletic events and student activities. Additionally, you may have received a text message from CHS earlier in the week with updates. Our students continue to share on Instagram and we have an updated official Chantilly HS IG that we encourage you to follow.  Please also see the note about TalkingPoints text application below.  More to come!  Thank you for all of your feedback.

A few highlights of connections this week:

Students:

  • Student Voices: Mr. Shin and I met with a student focus group representing many of our student organization and leadership groups to hear about their experiences and sense of belonging at Chantilly. I love hearing our student voices and their suggestions for how to ensure all students feel they belong.
  • Senior Nights: Congratulations to our seniors who were celebrated at girls' lacrosse and tennis and boys' tennis earlier this week.  We are proud of our class of 2023!
  • Spotlight on Learning: Thank you to our Robotics program students who represented Chantilly at the pyramid Spotlight on Learning earlier this week and demonstrated Portrait of a Graduate skills in action.
  • Cabaret: It was a pleasure to hear our Chantilly Showstoppers perform at the Red Carpet Cabaret this week.  Wow, we have so many talented Chargers!
  • Staff Appreciation BBQ: Thank you to our Leadership and Culinary students and staff, along with our Admin Team grillers who put on a fantastic Staff Appreciation BBQ today in the rain! (pictured above).

Staff:

  • We have been having a great week celebrating our OUTSTANDING Charger Faculty and Staff. We are grateful for your partnership and support to promote student success. Notes to staff make a big impact.  Students and families are encouraged  to write a note to a CHS staff member and send an email, a card, or complete this short form to Thank A Charger.
  • We celebrated National Library Week and Administrative Professionals Week and thanked our amazing librarians and administrative assistants and office assistants for all of their great work to support students, families and the community.
  • Thank you to our SBTS, Emily Phelan, and teacher leaders, Mary Catherine Keating and Nicole Abba for presenting at the pyramid Spotlight on Learning and sharing how Potrait of a Graduate is happening across classes and content.

Community:

  • It was wonderful to connect with so many parents and caregivers at our PTSA meeting this week. I encourage you to join and become involved in our Chantilly PTSA.
  • Hidden in Plain Site presentation was very well attended. We are grateful to the Fairfax County Police Department for sharing information and resources to support conversations with our students about risky behaviors and substance abuse.

I am looking forward to making many more Charger Connections in the coming weeks!  I hope to see you at CHS very soon.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations. You can do that through e-mail (atgoodloe@fcps.edu), call 703-222-8100, or through the form located here. Please remember that if you do not include your information on the form, I will not be able to follow-up.

Sincerely,

4.  All-Night Grad Party (ANGP)

Each year the the CHS PTSA is proud to sponsor the All-Night Grad Party for our senior class. This fun and memorable event is a safe place for our kids to celebrate graduation with their classmates. The event is the night of graduation and runs from 11:30pm over night until 5:00am the next day.

All Night Grad Party requires many volunteers to make the event fun and memorable for the senior class. Most of the volunteers are underclassmen parents which is why we are reaching out to ALL of our wonderful parents!

We need you! There are many opportunities available to help both before and during the event. Check out our Sign Up Genius and join the fun!

7.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  Dr. Goodloe meets with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Jesse Chon has made significant strides in his class work.  Great job, Jesse!  Ms. Brittanye Mohrbacher
  • Eleanor (Ellie) Hawkins' commitment to AP Capstone Seminar is inspiring to her cohorts and instructor. Her willingness to prioritize learning course-critical thinking/writing skills over "just-trying-to-get-the-highest-grade" demonstrates maturity, self-awareness, and leadership abilities well beyond her peers...and her years!  Mr. Charles Koch
  • Yesily Ramos Herrera is engaged in all aspects of the class. He makes real world connections to the content on a daily basis. He has a zest for learning and has a positive influence on the classroom and students around him.  Mr. John Glufling
  • Mariana (Mia) Schembri is a hard-working creative student. She is very kind and helps the students around her by being a role model. Ms. Mary Catherine Keating
  • Leah Thorn is working hard and seeing great academic success in the classroom. This has increased her self-confidence, which, in turn, had led to even more success and more confidence. Leah is realizing what I have known all along - she is an extremely capable history student! Keep up the great work, Leah!  Ms. Angie Rollet
  • Korey Weaver is actively engaged and participates every class.  Great work Korey!  Mr. Chris Hathaway
