Month of the Military Child - Purple Up Breakfast at CHS

1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

It has been a great week at Chantilly. Students and staff returned from the long weekend and charged into the fourth quarter with energy and purpose. We know that the end of the school year is fast approaching and assessment season is upon us.

Students:

  • April is the Month of the Military Child and it was a pleasure to celebrate our military connected students with a breakfast and chat this week. I appreciated hearing student voices, sharing how we can enhance connections and support transitions for our military kids.
  • On a Roll recognitions: Student Services hosted a reception for over 40 students who were nominated by their teachers for a special recognition for their growth, perseverance, and hard work demonstrated throughout the year. AP, Zack Winfrey shared his story and commended the students for their commitment to becoming the best person they can be and encouraged them to focus on their future.
  • Senior Night - Spring Athletics are in full swing and I was happy to celebrate the first of many senior nights for spring athletics at Softball. Congratulations seniors!
  • Main Stage presentation: I am looking forward to seeing our students present The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time this weekend. Congratulations to our very talented cast, crew and staff who have worked so hard to put on this show. See ticket information below.

Staff:

  • Pyramid Art Show: Huge thanks to our Art department for hosting our pyramid art show this past Wednesday. It was amazing to see the talents of our K-12 students from all of the feeder schools on display. We are so grateful for the work of our Art teachers.
  • April 24-28 is CHS Appreciation Week and Wellness Week.  We will be celebrating the commitment and support of our staff and focusing on how to stress less and practice self-care next week throughout the school. Notes to staff make a big impact.  I encourage you to write a note to a CHS staff member and send an email, a card or complete this short form to Thank A Charger.

Community:

  • Come to the Chantilly Pyramid Spotlight on Learning at Franklin MS, Tuesday April 25 from 6:00-7:30 PM. • The Global Classroom Project was highlighted this week through a partnership in Madame Delamatta's French classes as we welcomed Mr. Seydy Ly from Senegal to visit our school and students connected virtually with classes and students in Senegal.
  • Our Indoor Guard and Drum Line presented an outstanding performance for friends and families ahead of their trip to Dayton, Ohio for this week's National performance. Our gym was packed for the energizing show!

2.  CHS Performing Arts Presents:  The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Fifteen year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is 7 minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world.

Last month, the division hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. During this impactful event, audience members heard testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic and learned facts from medical experts and law enforcement representatives.

Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for more information. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and how to get help for yourself or loved ones.

Hidden in Plain Sight

The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.

The hands-on portion is followed by an educational section that includes a PowerPoint presentation detailing the red flag props that the room contained and how it is indicative of — or used in — risky behavior. We include up to date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behavior and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life.  Let’s open the door to communicating with our teens!

Join us Thursday, April 27th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Chantilly High School (Library).  Click here for more information.
