Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We had a quiet closing to the 3rd quarter. Many students handed in late work and took advantage of retake opportunities. I also announced that after 16 years as the principal of Langston Hughes that I will be retiring at the end of the year. There’s much work to be done until then.
The warmer weather reminds us that summer is close and that we are heading into the final stretch. Our SOL exams are only one month away. Please save the dates so that your student can be present and prepared for their exams. The schedule for the SOLs is as follows: May 12-Science 8, May 16-Reading 7 and 8, and May 18-all Math contents.
Classes will be doing final preparation for these exams; we appreciate your prioritizing your student’s attendance in classes. We will see students Monday for a Blue Day, and the first day of the 4th quarter.

3nd Quarter Ended April 13th - Report Cards and SIS ParentVUE
The last day of the 3rd quarter was Thursday, April 13th. The Grade Book and Report Card modules in SIS ParentVUE will be closed from April 13th – Tuesday, April 25th for teachers to update final 3rd quarter grades.
If you do not already have a ParentVUE SIS account, it is very important for you to activate this feature to support your child’s academic success. Through ParentVUE, you are able to monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. In addition, all students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. SIS/ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Do you need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks you through the steps on how to do so. Watch this video to learn how to set up your account. You can also find out more about SIS ParentVUE here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/student-information-system-sis-fcps/sis-parent-account-overview
Attendance Matters!
Did you know that attendance and academic performance are related? Many teens don’t think it matters to skip a class during the day, but it does! in middle and high school if students miss a few classes, they can quickly start to struggle academically. Lessons build on one another and move more quickly in the upper grades. Skipping classes means risking failing their classes! Please talk to your student about the importance of attendance so that when we return from spring break, we are ready to learn!

Basketball Tryouts!!!!!
I hope you all enjoyed your spring break! We will be having our next tryouts for our upcoming basketball game against Herndon.
The girl’s team will be next Monday, April 17, 2023 from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm in the gym.
The boy’s team will be next Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm in the gym.
The game is May 19th, but we're going to start fresh with new teams to give others an opportunity to prove themselves.
We'd like to put our best product of players on the court. Tell a friend and bring your A game to tryouts next week. Also, as a reminder, your behavior is being watched (attendance, tardies, respect, discipline, grades, etc.), so keep that in mind when trying to represent Hughes MS. We want to show Herndon who has the better team, so don't be too cool or too proud to show your stuff.
See you then!

Opioid overdoses are on the rise across the country, including in Fairfax County. Most fatal overdoses in Fairfax County in recent years involved fentanyl.
Last month, FCPS hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. During this impactful event, audience members heard testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic, and learned facts from medical experts and law enforcement representatives.
The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Woodson High School. FCPS principals and staff will share what is happening in our schools, and give updates on the work to educate our students and prevent substance misuse.
Transportation will be available from select schools throughout the county. View the registration page for details.
Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for more information. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for ways to take action and get help for yourself or loved ones.
