Dear Cub Run Families,

What a week we've had at Cub Run! We headed into the weekend last Friday with the annual Cub Run vs. Virginia Run volleyball match at Westfield High School. We played several rounds of games between staff and between students, and fun was had by all! I'm so proud of our cubbies for their efforts, their cheer, and their sportsmanship. Many thanks to families and staff for coming out to cheer us on! The sense of community was palpable, and we're already looking forward to next year's rematch.

On Sunday, March 26, over 600 sixth graders from 101 schools across the county gathered at Lake Braddock Secondary School for the All-County Chorus concert. Two of our very own cubbies participated in this incredible event, Zaina Abu-Taa and Izzy Combs! I was blown away by the talent and passion that this group shared with those of us in the audience. We are so thankful to our music teachers, Ms. Kristi Shultz, Ms. Millie Kieley, and Ms. Jennifer Weingartner for their dedication in bringing music into our lives.

And finally, this evening, I visited the Westfield Pyramid Art Show, where many of our cubbies had works of art on display. The variety of art media used to express emotions, ideas, and concepts was truly amazing to see. Congratulations to our cubbies whose art was chosen for this very special event, and kudos to Cub Run's art teacher, Ms. Cindy Brock, for cultivating a love of art in our cubbies every day!

Understanding Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) Reports

Grade 3-8 students across Virginia took VGA tests in fall and winter of 2022-23. FCPS mailed score reports to families earlier this month that combine Fall and Winter results. When viewing students’ scores, it is important to keep in mind that there is no “passing” or “failing” for VGA tests and that each vertical scaled score reflects performance on a single day. VGA results should be used alongside other available data for a more complete picture of students’ academic progress. Also keep in mind that the VGA asks questions from the entire curriculum, including some standards that will not be taught until later in the school year.

The FCPS VGA Score Reports webpage now includes a section on Understanding VGA Results, featuring Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). This section will continue to be updated throughout the spring to address incoming questions and to reflect additional state guidance as it is released.

Spring 2023 SOL Schedule

Below is the Cub Run Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) dates for students in grades 3-6. Please be sure that your student is well rested and in school for their scheduled assessments.

AAP

AAP Spring Newsletter: Screening for Subject-Specific and Part-Time Service

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners. Students may be screened for subject-specific and part-time AAP services at any time in the school year. However, in the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.  Because all students are screened in the spring, it is not necessary to submit a referral form.   Families will be notified of eligibility of newly-identified, part-time services during the second week of June.

To learn more, please access the Newsletter here or contact Cub Run's Advanced Academic Resources Teacher (AART), Mrs. Val Sesso at vmsesso@fcps.edu.

Update Your Emergency Care Information Through weCare@school

Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system, to parents/caregivers who have registered for their own parent account. weCare helps manage emergency medical information by allowing parents to enter and update their children’s medical data online at their convenience. That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive eNotify communications from the district and their child’s school. eNotify is the communications tool for FCPS emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closing and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent via email, text, and occasionally phone.

Does Your Child Qualify for PreK or Early Head Start?

PreK_HS

FCPS PreK and Early Head Start Programs provide a quality preschool experience with no cost to qualifying families who live in Fairfax County. Your family may qualify for preK or Early Head Start if you:

  • Have a child who will be age 3 or 4 by September 30,
  • Receive free or reduced-price school meals, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Social Security Income, and/or are considered homeless per definition of the McKinney Vento Act, or
  • Receive resources such as from a shelter and/or the FCPS homeless liaison office.

Though many families may qualify, spaces are limited. Selection is based on need, not “first come, first serve”, with pre-K priority given to 4 year olds. It is important for all families to apply as soon as possible.

Early Head Start is for children 2 years of age and younger, and pregnant women who live in the Reston, Herndon, and Springfield areas.

Visit the Pre-K and Early Head Start webpage for more information, or call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).

Seeking Families' Input for the 23-24 School Year

It's already time to start thinking about class groupings for our cubbies for the 2023-24 school year! We value families' input in this process and ask that you fill out this form to let us know if your student will be returning to Cub Run next year. For those who are planning to return, there is an option on the form to tell us more about the type of learning environment that best serves your child, as well as any other considerations for us to keep in mind as we create class groupings for next year. We ask that families not make requests for specific teachers.

We are in need of volunteers to pick up flowers each Friday from Trader Joe's in Reston, VA.
