Chargin Up

Chargin Up

1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

It has been a great week to be a Charger! It is officially spring and we are just a little over a week from spring vacation.  I know I am excited for the warmer weather and time to refresh and relax with family and friends.  Spring vacation is a great time for staff, students, and families to catch up on all the things we enjoy with the people we love. It has been an FCPS expectation for many years that no major assignments or assessments may be due or scheduled for the first two days following a vacation. This practice provides time for all in our community to take a well-deserved break. We recognize that the end of the third quarter is fast approaching and will wrap up on April 13 and will emphasize expectations for assignment deadlines with students.

As I continue to get to know the Charger community, I will share the great things happening at CHS and highlight the relationships and connections made. Highlights of a few connections from the past week:

.Students:

  • Our Charger student voices are strong!  I appreciated time talking with our Leadership 1 class, and our Student Equity Ambassador Leaders (SEALS) this week to hear their feedback and ideas for how to connect with all of our students and ensure good things are happening for all at Chantilly. I am looking forward to more conversations with our student groups to hear their voices.
  • Chargin Up was a HUGE success: Our Activities Fair welcomed over 600 members of our class of 2027 from Franklin MS and Rocky Run MS to the building. Our rising 9th graders connected with Chargers representing activities, athletics, and performing arts to hear about all of the opportunities to get involved at Chantilly.
  • I had the pleasure of visiting our Symphonic Wind class to hear the students participating in a workshop with James M. David, an American Composer based in Colorado.  Students are currently working on one of his newest works, Urban Light, which they will perform at the National Concert Band Festival at the end of the month. Dr. David joined the class via Google Meet to offer insight and feedback for our students!

Staff:

  • This week I connected with our Instructional Council and we discussed our grading and assessment practices and how we as as school team can best support and help all students to grow. I have been impressed by the strong commitment of our instructional leaders and their focus on learning.

Community:

  • Please join me for a time to talk and connect at our upcoming Principal's Coffee on March 29 at 8:30 AM.  Details below.
  • It was great to be a part of the Fairfax County Regional Science and Engineering Fair and Awards presentation last Sunday at Robinson  Secondary School. Our Chargers were well represented. Congratulations to all of the entrants and to the Grand Prize selections and alternates.

I am looking forward to making many more Charger Connections in the coming weeks!

5.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  Dr. Goodloe meets with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Ximena Mata-Medrano is currently earning an A in her math class. She has shown outstanding attention-to-detail in her work – an important habit in the study of mathematics that often separates outstanding students from good students.  Ximena is a great role model for her peers. Her attendance is regular and punctual. She is attentive and follows directions. She has a strong work ethic. She is polite and respectful. Ximena, it is a pleasure to work with you and thank you for being a great role model for your peers.  Mr. Steve Blanchard
  • I'm so proud of Kaden Nedtranon! He has truly risen to the challenge! He worked hard, asked questions, came for extra help. He is the true epitome of someone who can succeed.  If you work hard nothing is impossible! Keep up the great work, Kaden!  Ms. Debbie Kim
  • Fernanda Nolasco is such a hard-working student. She comes in early to get extra help before assessments and her hard work is paying off! Fernanda is a role model to her fellow classmates. It is a pleasure having such a fine student in my class!  Ms. Karen Fiala
  • Cristian Plazaola Urias isn't afraid to put in the hard work. He manages his time well, remains engaged 100% of the time, and is a model for his peers. And, he does it all with a shy smile on his face. Cristian is an exceptional student in every way.  Ms. Anne Crismon
  • Diego Valenzuela-Vasquez has made amazing progress this quarter! He is motivated to succeed, and his attitude is terrific. I am so proud of the accomplishments Diego has achieved this quarter. Keep up the hard work!  Ms. Karen Fiala

6.  Celebrations and Observances - March

Ramadan began March 22: This year, the first day of Ramadan was Wednesday, March 22. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time for spiritual discipline for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.
