1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

As I finish up my second full week at Chantilly High School, I am reflecting on the many opportunities I have had to make Chantilly Connections. Over the coming weeks, I will share the great things happening at CHS and highlight the relationships and connections made.

Students:

  • Leadership and Journalism students welcomed me to their classes and shared topics that are important to them and their suggestions for how we can grow in the Chantilly community together. We discussed concerns about parking, traffic, and attendance and how to better communicate with students. I appreciate hearing student voices and look forward to talking with additional student groups in the coming weeks.
  • The FBLA Etiquette lunch was a huge success. Chef Clay engaged our students in a three course luncheon with instruction on proper use of utensils and how to navigate potential challenges of a business lunch.  Kudos to our Culinary students who served a delicious meal and thanks to Chef Clay, Mr. Loube and Mr. Keel.
  • Spring sports kicked off this week with home games for soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball. I enjoyed seeing our girls and boys soccer and girls lacrosse Chargers in action. Huge thanks to our Athletic Training programs and our students who support our athletic teams.

Staff:

  • Thanks to Ms. Greiner for connecting with our Class of 2024 students and their families with tips and resources to support the college application process. It was great to see so many families in attendance at her College 101 presentation on Tuesday night.
  • In our 50th Anniversary Chantilly Changemaker speaker series, Acting Assistant Principal (SS3), Mr. Romine shared his educational journey with students and emphasized how important it is to take advantage of the many opportunities for learning and growth here at Chantilly. We are grateful to have such an outstanding Chantilly alum on our team.

Community:

  • Thank you to our PTSA board for all of the support they provide to our staff, students, and community. Special thanks for their recent funding of several grants to support student activities and staff initiatives focused on student growth. If you are not yet a member of PTSA, please consider joining. We need you and value your partnership.
  • I am looking forward to attending the Regional Science Fair and Awards presentation on Sunday at Robinson to see many of our Chargers share their projects this weekend.  Good luck to all of the entries.
  • Please join me for a time to talk and connect at our upcoming Principal's Coffee on March 29 at 8:30 AM.  Details below.

I am looking forward to making many more Charger Connections in the coming weeks!

Traffic and Parking Reminders

Thank you for your attention to the parking reminders sent out to the community and posted on Schoology. A few reminders:

  • Do not park in numbered spots, especially in West lot across from the school.
  • Students should cross Stringfellow Road using the cross walk at the traffic light and follow the instructions of the crossing guard. Safety is our priority. Students should not cross traffic stopped on Stringfellow.
  • Use designated student drop off zones and follow directions of security personnel at all times.

Supporting Health and Wellness:

No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for Students Starting April 10

FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to begin offering virtual mental health services to high school students via live video sessions. Starting Monday, April 10, parents/caregivers who have been struggling to find a therapist for their child or who notice changes in their child’s behavior will be able to connect them virtually with a licensed therapist.

Teletherapy services for students are short-term, evidence-based, and culturally-responsive. Teletherapy is available on any device, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Therapists will be locally-licensed clinicians; 50% of whom identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC); and 40% of whom are bilingual. More than 15 languages are available.

Hazel Health’s licensed therapists can help students who are experiencing:

  • Mood/behavior changes, lack of motivation, grief/loss.
  • Anxiety, worry, fears.
  • Bullying, sexual identity challenges, challenging peer and family relationships.
  • Academic stress.

The first step for parents is to provide information through an opt-in form. Visit FCPS’ Teletherapy webpage for details.

Community Meeting on the Dangers of FentanylMonday, March 13, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid and Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis hosted nearly 400 families, staff, and community members for a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. During this impactful event, audience members heard testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic and learned facts from medical experts and law enforcement representatives.  The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, with our next community meeting on the critical topic of fentanyl danger and opioid awareness. More information is coming soon. Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for updates as they become available. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and how to get help for yourself or loved ones

4.  Substance Use Education

Changing our state of consciousness is part of the human experience (kids spinning in circles to induce dizziness, meditation, runner’s high, and more) but using substances has more negative than positive side effects.

Recent Student Successes this week

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  Dr. Goodloe meets with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Jose Diaz Argueta can be a model of perseverance, determination and great attitude. He came to the US with no English and worked his way through to the senior class passing a lot of assessments. Jose is an inspiration for all his friends and he is always ready to help others. It is a pleasure to have him in class.  Ms. Tatiana Goldovsky
  • Melizabeth Coats Figaro has excellent attendance. She is very motivated: completes all assignments, is very attentive to instruction, and participates regularly. She attempts to understand and correct all mistakes in her work. She is a serious student with an excellent attitude, who is trying her utmost to improve her English.  Ms. Kim Hart
  • Farnoush Fallah is the definition of quiet confidence. She is always prepared, often doing more than is required. Also, when working with classmates, Farnoush listens to all viewpoints, standing firm on points she feels are important, while accepting input that enhances the group's work. Her commitment to excellence is inspirational!  Ms. Gwen Dillon
  • Edgar Garcia Granados is such a positive influence to our class. He is hardworking, respectful, and kind to lend a hand to any classmate who may need it. He actively participates in class and is not afraid to take risks in learning. Proud of you Edgar! Keep up the good work!  Ms. Joyce Kang
  • Heesoo (Sarah) Lee has led the charge for herself and her peers with respect to rhetorical analysis--easily one of the more difficult skills to practice and acquire in AP English Language and Composition. She takes her feedback to heart and quickly makes revisions to improve her writing. Even more importantly, her insights have helped classmates thrive as well, and as such, she embodies the GRITTY ethos we established as a class at the beginning of the school year as well as the collaborative spirit we wish to cultivate in our class.  Mr. Bobby Nelson
  • Dunya Rahmani is such a pleasure to have in class. She always comes to class ready to participate, share her positivity, and is eager to learn more. Dunya exhibits outstanding work ethic and always does more than expected. Congratulations Dunya for a job well done!!  Ms. Joyce Kang
  • Aubrey Ramey has an overall great attitude and respectful manner.  In class, she has been doing classwork and contributing to conversations.  I'm so very proud of her.  Ms. Michelle Gantzer
  • In the few months that Jefferson Ruiz Quinoz has been at Chantilly HS, he has shown that he is a determined and diligent student. He strives to do his best on all assignments, often doing more than is required because of his desire to learn, to grow in his skills, and to turn in his best work. We can't wait to see what the future holds for Jefferson!  Ms. Gwen Dillon
  • As a new student to CHS, Josiah (Joey) Swartwood has made a smooth transition. He has a positive attitude, has been courteous and respectful of staff and peers, and contributes meaningfully to class discussions.  Ms. Theresa Giroux

10.  Celebrations and Observances - March

  • National Women’s History Month

  • Disability Awareness Month

  • Equity in Education Month

  • Celebrating Arts in Our Schools

  • National Nutrition Month

  • Ramadan begins March 22: This year, the first day of Ramadan is Wednesday, March 22. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time for spiritual discipline for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids. Ramadan begins with a half “O Day” on March 22, followed by an O Day on March 23. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.
