Message from the Principal
Dear Cub Run Families,
This issue of News You Choose is coming to your inboxes later than usual this evening, because I wanted to highlight this evening's Cub Run Math Night, which was a huge success!
 |
We had over 300 cubbies and family members attend, and fun was had by all! The students were so excited to learn new math games, eat pizza, and bring home math games to play with their families! For those families who weren't able to attend tonight, your child will be bringing home family math games tomorrow to keep math night fun at home! Many, many thanks to Mrs. Tracy Cousino and Mrs. Jenna Jensen for spearheading this event, and to our amazing Math Night Committee, Mrs. Cindy Bergeron, Mrs. Danielle Brown, Mrs. Kristen Coch, Mrs. Tracy Cousino, Mrs. Nausheen Haider, Mrs. Jenna Jensen, Mrs. Stephanie McWhirt, Mrs. Sarah Phillips, and Mrs. Val Sesso! Many volunteer hours were spent making and organizing the games and the events - from staff to parents and guardians to middle and high school students who served pizza this evening. Many thanks to our generous PTA who provided some funding, and funding was also supplied by our ESSER grant. We had a huge staff turnout to set up and run the math stations, and everyone pitched in to break everything down at the end of the evening with help from our wonderful custodians. Students were so excited to see their teachers and staff there with them to celebrate math! One student said it best as she left tonight with her family, games in hand: "I just love math!" :-)
With tomorrow's 2-hour early release and Friday, March 3rd a student holiday, I hope you'll have some time to play some math games with your students over the long weekend.

Join us in celebrating reading this week with the following activities!
 Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…
There’s an easy five-step process outlined for parents looking to register their child for kindergarten:
- Determine eligibility.
- Identify your local school.
- Gather documents.
- Fill out forms.
- Schedule an appointment.
After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

Parental Notifications and Policy 3290: Sexually Explicit Content
A Virginia law passed in spring 2022 requires schools to create a policy for parental notification of sexually explicit content/materials. In December 2022, the School Board adopted FCPS Policy 3290: Parental Notification Regarding Instructional Materials with Sexually Explicit Content.
FCPS has had policies in place for many years regarding the review of instructional materials, communication with parents, and options for alternative instructional materials.
An expectation of this new policy is the 30-day parental notification requirement of sexually explicit content in instructional materials assigned or selected by teachers. After reviewing the notification letter, parents or caregivers who prefer to choose alternative instructional materials for their child must submit this form to the appropriate teacher within the 30-day notification window. Naglieri Testing: Grade 1
On Tuesday, March 14th, all first graders will take the Naglieri (NNAT3). The NNAT is a nonverbal measure of general intellectual ability. The test evaluates a student’s reasoning and problem-solving skills through the identification of patterns involving geometric shapes and pictorial designs. The test is designed to assess ability without requiring the student to read, write, or speak. The NNAT3 is an abilities test, so children are not expected to study or prepare for the test the way they would for an achievement test.
It is important that your child attend school the day of testing. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school. It is also important that your child has had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing.
School Board Approves 2023-24 School Year Calendar
The Fairfax County School Board approved a calendar for the 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26 school years at their February 9 meeting. Learn more about the approved calendar.
The first day of the 2023-24 school year will be Monday, August 21, and the last day will be Wednesday, June 12.
Developing a school year calendar is a balancing act, involving multiple factors that must be considered. Community input is one of those factors, and we appreciate our community for being involved in the calendar development process.

Registration is Open for School Year 2023-2024!
If you have a rising kindergarten student, or are new to Cub Run, Kindergarten Registration is coming soon for the 2023-2024 school year!
On April 14th, Cub Run will be registering rising kindergarten students. Please contact our Student Information Assistant (SIA) Ms. Doris Velez to set up an appointment. You can also reach her at 703-633-7503. The registration will be open on April 14th from 9 am-12:30 pm. When you register your student, you will be added to a rising kindergarten email distribution list.
We will contact you with information about our upcoming kindergarten orientation!
The following documents are required for registration:
- Proof of residency: A deed or lease agreement
- Proof of birth: Original birth certificate
- Health documentation: A certificate of physical examination including required screenings completed within the last 12 months prior to starting school by a licensed physician.
- Immunization records: Up-to-date records in accordance with the child's age
Registration packets are available online or can be picked up in the front office.

Flowers Volunteers
Every Friday, Traders Joe's in Reston donates flowers to Cub Run! These flowers not only go to our teachers and staff to brighten their day at the end of the week, but they are also donated to a local homeless shelter after they have been sorted and organized by our student Green Team. We are in need of volunteers to pick up flowers each Friday from Trader Joe's in Reston, VA. If you think you might be able to lend a hand, please look at the dates here and sign up for a date that you are available!

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for families, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees at Cub Run ES. We love our staff members; let's tell them how we feel!
