Kindness 'Ties' us together

Note from Dr. Sheers

We wanted to remind you of WSES safety procedures that are in place to ensure we are doing our best to keep the school safe and secure.

Volunteers and parents are always welcome at West Springfield.  All visitors are required to enter the building through our front doors.  The office staff monitors visitor entry.  After entering the building, visitors must check in at the office where they receive a visitor’s pass that must be worn while in the building.  Visitors should check back into the office prior to leaving the building.

All other exterior doors remain locked at all times. All exterior classrooms, such as the trailers, keep their exterior doors locked throughout the school day. As a standard procedure, students are required to have a buddy with them at all times when they leave the classroom.

West Springfield has extensive FCPS crisis and emergency plans that are practiced and discussed with staff. They deal with a variety of threats from both inside and outside of the building. We use specific language to inform staff members about a threat and specific procedures indicate what to do in different scenarios. For obvious security reasons, our Crisis Plan scenarios cannot be shared, but please know that all staff members review and practice these drills routinely.

Additionally, FCPS has spent considerable time and effort in planning and practicing safety and security measures appropriate for dealing with a critical incident.  More information can be found here.

In addition to the security measures in place, our school counselors and classroom teachers support students in lessons around bullying, telling v. tattling, and provide students strategies in how to positively resolve conflict and support students as needed.

We are committed to supporting the safety of our students. It is our top priority. If you ever have concerns regarding the safety of our school, please don’t hesitate to contact school administration or report school safety issues, such as threats, unsafe or dangerous situations, illegal drug activity, theft, gang activity, the existence of weapons, vandalism, and concerns about student wellness through the FCPS Tipline.

Partnering with you,

Kelly Sheers, Principal
Patty Hibner, Assistant Principal
