LHMS Weekly News and Updates

MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Langston Hughes is a truly a school of the world with over 50 languages spoken in our students’ homes. This week we celebrated with an International Spirit Week. Students wore colors that represented their flags, they wore traditional dress from their culture, and they even represented their elementary schools with their elementary school colors or class shirts. It was fun to see students represent who they are!

Speaking of a world school, Langston Hughes, and South Lakes grades 7-10 are a combined International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. Students at South Lakes in grades 11 and 12 can also choose to continue their IB education with the IB Career-related Program or the IB Diploma Program. Next week, a group of program evaluators from different parts of the world will “visit” our schools virtually to give us both commendations and recommendations for our program implementation. Evaluators will speak with administrators, teachers, staff members, and invited parents and students to better understand our schools. Though the visit is virtual, evaluators will “tour” our schools. We look forward to showcasing the excellent IB education we provide in our pyramid!

We hope to see our Langston Hughes students tonight at SkateQuest for the PTA sponsored Skate Night. The event is from 7:30-9:30 and parents are welcome to drop off – just be there on time for pick up! You can still buy tickets for $10 at the door with cash or credit. We hope you can join for this fun event!

Help Shape FCPS’ Future!

Our students are preparing for careers that don’t exist today. In order to keep pace with these needs, we must rethink our plans for the future and how we will best serve our students for this new era.

We encourage you to join us in this important work of developing a new Strategic Plan

You’re invited to participate in a Strategic Planning Community Forum

  • Thursday, February 16, 6:30 to 8 p.m. (Hunters Woods ES) Register.

Community Forums will provide families, students, staff, and community members with an opportunity to review student achievement, access, and perception data and identify both strengths and challenges within the data. Community input from the forums will be shared with the Core Planning Team to incorporate recommendations into finalized Strategic Plan goals.

Parents, over the next few weeks, help is needed in the health classes while the students create projects for the vaping and tobacco awareness campaign LHMS is taking part in.  More adults in the room will help the creation process go smoother.
