MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Wednesday we kicked off a month of Black History Month activities by recognizing our namesake, Langston Hughes, whose birthday happens to be February 1st! Students will hear quotes daily from famous Black activists, decorate their Connections class door, hear, or participate in a Poetry Slam, and have a concert from a local artist sponsored by the Reston Community Center this month. We are proud to represent Langston Hughes who desired a world where all people were valued and heard. Our school has students from over 55 nations and is proof that all cultures and peoples can live in community together bettering ourselves and our world.

On Monday during 3rd period the school will come together to recognize the students who achieved Honor Roll for the 2nd Quarter. The final totals are 298 students in the A/B Honor Roll and 222 students in the All a’s Honor Roll.  Well done, students! Congratulations. We are proud of you!

“I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.”

– Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time. During his time in the NBA, “MJ” helped popularize basketball. That’s because people around the world looked up to Michael Jordan for his incredible skills on the court. Additionally, he is known for his competitiveness and devotion to the sport. As a result, MJ became a pop culture icon, popularizing Air Jordan sneakers and starring in the Space Jam movie. All in all, Jordan played in the NBA for fifteen seasons. He was also voted MVP six times and won six championships with the Chicago Bulls.

Help Shape FCPS’ Future!

Our students are preparing for careers that don’t exist today. In order to keep pace with these needs, we must rethink our plans for the future and how we will best serve our students for this new era.

We encourage you to join us in this important work of developing a new Strategic Plan

You’re invited to participate in a Strategic Planning Community Forum

  • Thursday, February 16, 6:30 to 8 p.m. (Hunters Woods ES) Register.

Community Forums will provide families, students, staff, and community members with an opportunity to review student achievement, access, and perception data and identify both strengths and challenges within the data. Community input from the forums will be shared with the Core Planning Team to incorporate recommendations into finalized Strategic Plan goals.

If you do not already have a ParentVUE SIS account, it is very important for you to activate this feature to support your child’s academic success. Through ParentVUE, you are able to monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. In addition, all students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. SIS/ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Do you need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks you through the steps on how to do so. Watch this video to learn how to set up your account. Happy School Counseling Week – February 6th – 10th!

Our school counselors are such a vital part of our school community. They support the whole child and help our students to become self-aware, make good decisions, develop relational skills, and resolve conflicts. They also support students in setting and reaching goals, improving academics, and they provide academic advising. Join us in celebrating our school counselors – Ms. Bach, Ms. Degraffenried, Ms. Brooks, and Mr. Blocker. They are the helping hands we need at Langston Hughes, and we love our school counselors!
