Bryant Newsletter January 2023

We hope everyone is having a wonderful and healthy start to this New Year 2023.  January is a particularly busy month at Bryant as testing is wrapping up, we are getting ready for February graduation and it is the start of our spring semester.

Food for Neighbors Food Drive January

Did you know that we have an incredible partnership with Food for Neighbors (FFN) and they help stock our food pantry each month? Please reach out to your child’s counselor if you are in need of items.  Once a month, we send large grocery bags home with each student. This picture is from a January Food Drive where Ms. Harrison collected 55 bins of food and met Ms. Fairfax and Ms. Virginia Volunteer with Laura Wainwright, our FFN Coordinator.

Bryant students are working to create a yearbook! A small group is currently meeting during Learning Seminar. We have a photography team established, have started accumulating and storing photos, and are working on our yearbook theme. We look forward to working on creating content for this first-ever artifact of Bryant High School. Our English teacher, Mrs. Jill Surh, is spearheading this awesome effort.

Students visit Virginia Senate

Morelle Brant, and Yensii Mendez attended the Puller Program in mid January. This program was named after Toddy Puller who was an avid advocate for the citizens of Virginia and allows high school students in the Mt. Vernon district to observe and participate in the Virginia State Government process.  This all-expense trip was life changing for our Bryant students and we are grateful for our very own Ms. Genie McCreery who coordinated this transformative experience.

Ms.Zhang’s classes celebrated Chinese New Year with festivities, food and fun on January 19th.  Students learned about the importance of the “Spring Festival,” what it represents, and that it marks a time of  a desire for a new beginning.  Participants were encouraged to wear red as this is the main color for the Lunar New Year, denoting prosperity and energy.

Outstanding Teacher Award to Ms. LaPorta

Bryant’s own Brook LaPorta was selected as an FCPS Outstanding Teacher.  In addition to being a science extraordinaire, Brooke LaPorta is a park naturalist at Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County.  On January 22, Ms. LaPorta conducted an “Owl Walk” for the public.  She spent 45 minutes educating adults and children on different species of owls and their habits.  She then took the group out into the park to look and listen for owls.  Bryant High School is grateful to have Brooke LaPorta as a part of our family!!

Bryant is looking forward to the month of February where we celebrate and honor our 35 high school graduates.  Counselors will begin academic advising with our students for next school year (hard to believe we are already thinking about next school year) and visiting the West Potomac Academy.

Wishing everyone a heart full February!
