Counseling Week

February 3, 2023

It’s another “Fabulous Fairfax Friday!” This week we have seen some great examples of Portrait of a Graduate (POG) skills that culminate in Presentations of Learning (POL). Our Science Fair was an amazing example of POG as you saw students collaborating, investigating, hypothesizing, researching, and synthesizing their results to share with their peers, teachers, and many other Science enthusiasts at FHS. We saw the spirit of collaboration in several content areas as our newly trained restorative practices staff engaged their classes in circles that elevate student voices around a variety of topics and help build community.

Our Legally Blonde, The Musical, production premieres tonight and what better way to see POG skills in action as students take to the stage for a culminating production - the technique, talent, staging and tech theater are all displayed together. In Art class we observed the start of the print making process and students were in the stage of both planning and creatively thinking to make dynamic prints. In our Fairfax Academy Music and Computer Technology class, students were critically thinking and creating an original score for a silent animation film.

Head on over to the Ernst Community Cultural Center on the campus of Northern Virginia Community College for Another FHS POG skill display from the recent Scholastic competition where students created capstone submission projects in digital art, painting, drawing, sculpture and photography; this included 31 winners and 1 National finalist from FHS! We will continue to offer multiple academic opportunities for students to share their learning and success. Be on the lookout for more Meta-POG-Nition!

Every Student, Every Strength, Every Day here at Fairfax High.

Yours in partnership,

Signature

How to Find Weather Closings/Delays

Winter Weather

With winter weather on the horizon, please take a moment to watch this video detailing how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Parents/caregivers should confirm their contact information is up-to-date in weCare@school (or, if you are an Employee, UConnect), in order to receive emails and text messages from FCPS. Bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.

Hispanic Leadership Alliance Scholarship Application Form

Hispanic Leadership Alliance

The Hispanic Leadership Alliance (HLA) scholarship is for a first-generation Latinx student from Fairfax County Public Schools. A first-generation Latinx student is one born abroad or to immigrant parents in the United States. Free Teen After School Program through Fairfax County

Teen After School Program

The Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services is offering free recreation and leisure programming for teens at the Mott Community Center. The new year kicked off our bi-weekly Game Nights for teens, quarterly field trips, and weekly cooking club. In addition to the leisure activities, we provide academic coaching, guided SAT preparation sessions, and STEAM enrichment programming (including our new computerized telescope)! Of course, we know that teens just want to hang out, and decompress from the day and we have dedicated time each day for teens to take care of their mental wellbeing.

There is a bus from Fairfax High School that drops off at the Mott center each school day and families would be responsible for picking up their teen by 6pm. Pinn Community Center on Zion Road also offers teen programming, but students must arrange their own transportation. We offer a nutritious snack and supper to every participant and have special family meals planned throughout the year.

We are happy to welcome individuals of all abilities and backgrounds. There is also no commitment to a minimum number of days, or even time that teens stay each day. Any of the staff at the Center can answer questions that families may have. Families may register for their teen to attend by creating an account at FairfaxNCS - Registration System (usedirect.com)
