MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Parents and Caregivers,

Thank you to all who were able to attend our Rising 8th/9th grade information session at the PTA meeting last Monday and the Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night on Wednesday. For more information about course selection for the upcoming school year, you can access our 2023-2024 SY Hughes MS Registration Site from the menu on the Langston Hughes Middle School website or with this direct link: https://hughesms.fcps.edu/2023-2024-sy-hughes-ms-registration On the site, you will find course selection materials, presentation materials, information and videos about electives and other course offerings, and so much more. Please visit the site and email our Director of Student Services, Michele Beard, at mbeard@fcps.edu if you have any questions. Students will work with their counselors on course selection in February, and you will receive more detailed information about that process by the end of this month.

As an IB World School, Langston Hughes places a great value on the importance of serving our community and this weekend in Fairfax County, we honor Martin Luther King, Jr. through the MLK, Jr. Weekend of Service.  Volunteer Fairfax has compiled a list of service activities available this weekend for all ages: https://www.volunteerfairfax.org/events/mlk-jr-weekend-of-service-2023/.

We continue to support our students in reaching the FCPS goal of a combined 15 hours of service during students’ middle school years.  Students may complete opportunities posted on our X2Vol system, opportunities found through links on our Hughes Service Learning site, or opportunities they find independently.  Once a service activity is complete, they should log their hours and write up their brief reflections via X2Vol.

Our IB MYP Coordinator, Chris DelGrosso, visited all History 7 and Civics 8 classrooms during first quarter to ensure students understand the expectation and are able to log-in to our X2Vol system to log their hours.  For more information, visit our Hughes Service Learning site and the FCPS service learning site.  If you or your student still have questions, please email Mr. DelGrosso at cjdelgrosso@fcps.edu.

2nd Quarter Report Cards and SIS ParentVUE

The last day of the second quarter/first semester is Wednesday, January 25th. The Grade Book and Report Card modules in SIS ParentVUE will be closed on January 25th – February 6th for teachers to update final 2nd quarter and semester grades.

If you do not already have a ParentVUE SIS account, it is very important for you to activate this feature to support your child’s academic success. Through ParentVUE, you are able to monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. In addition, all students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. SIS/ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Do you need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks you through the steps on how to do so. Watch this video to learn how to set up your account. You can also find out more about SIS ParentVUE here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/student-information-system-sis-fcps/sis-parent-account-overview

Second Semester Schedules

Second semester begins Monday, January 30th. Students will receive a printed copy of their second semester schedules on Wednesday, January 25th. They will also be able to see their schedules in SIS StudentVue> If students are taking semester classes, their new classes will begin on January 30th. For some students taking semester classes, their PE class period may change in order to accommodate their second semester elective. Student schedules are set, and we do not make schedule changes during the school year other than for academic reasons.
