Fairhill Forum: Read, Read, Read

January 10, 2023

Dear Fairhill Families,

We are back in the swing of things! In our pictures below you will see our students engaged in reading. Did you know that all students at Fairhill have time to read independently each day at school? Students need time to practice the explicitly taught reading skills that they receive from their teachers. One way to support your student is to encourage them to practice reading at home as well. This will help them develop good reading habits. The more students read the more successful they will be, whether they practice reading fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, poetry, or listening to you or a loved one read to them.  All reading is helpful for students.

Mark your calendar with these upcoming events at Fairhill.  This Thursday we have our PTA meeting at 6:30 PM in the library and as a reminder, we have our PTA sponsored Fairhill Bingo Night on Friday, January 20th at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria. We hope to see you all at both events.

Take good care,

Ted & Courtney

winter weather

Keeping Warm During Outdoor Activities

As the cold weather months begin to move in, the weather is monitored for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent our students from being outside. This means that your child will often have the opportunity to go outside, even when it is cold out. For this reason, we encourage you to make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. We encourage you to dress your child in layers, so that they are able to adjust to their personal temperature preference throughout the day.

See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, such as a winter coat, gloves, and hat, we encourage you to reach out to our school counselors  Gihea Schwartz or Molly Young or to our family liaison Zakaria Raggad for support.

Career Day

Our third annual Career Fair will be on April 28, 2023! The purpose of Career Day is to expose students to a variety of careers in order to jumpstart their thinking about the future. By preparing early, students will be more likely to be college and career ready after high school graduation. Kindergarten through 6th grade students will participate in Career Day.

We can’t do it without you! Please think about how you may be able to support Career Day!  If you are interested and available, please complete this form and send back to school.

Questions? Email Mrs. Schwartz at gwschwartz@fcps.edu or Ms. Young at msyoung@fcps.edu
