WOODSON NEWS & EVENTS

Tardy Sweeps

Due to a high volume of students not arriving to class on time, we will conduct tardy sweeps this week. The consequence for students arriving unexcused to class will be an after-school detention on late bus days (Tuesday or Wednesday).

Parents/families, please help us by reminding your kids of the importance of getting to class on time.  We all, especially our teachers, appreciate your assistance with this matter.

Junior Night for the Class of 2024

Junior Night for the Class of 2024 will be held on Wednesday, January 11th at 6:30pm in the Woodson Auditorium. This event is for Juniors and their families. No pre-registration required.

Please join us to learn about post-secondary planning and supports for Juniors to include: understanding PSAT scores; college planning and the application process; information on exploring options related to the workforce, military, apprenticeships, and trade schools; and general college and career planning resources.

We’re excited to help Juniors and families learn more about what you need to know for your student’s post-secondary planning and next steps!

Woodson Student Services

Students participated in our Curriculum Information Fair today to learn more about courses being offered at Woodson next year. Additionally, Curriculum Night is on Monday, January 30th, when teachers will be available to discuss course options with students and families. This event is for rising 9th, 10th and 11th grade students and their families, and will run from 6-8pm. There are a lot of decisions to make when selecting classes. The Student Services Padlet has a section specifically for academic advising resources.

  • Monday, January 30th: Curriculum Night: 6-8pm (for rising 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students and their families)
  • Wednesday and Thursday, February 1st and 2nd: Teacher feedback meetings during all classes (teachers will conference individually with students during each class over these two days to provide feedback on course selections for next year)
  • Friday, February 3rd: Academic Advising for Juniors begins
  • Wednesday, February 8th: Sophomore Night, 6:30pm-8pm in Woodson Auditorium
  • Friday, February 17th: Academic Advising for Sophomores begins
  • Monday, February 27th: Academic Advising for Freshmen begins

The Student Services Padlets are always a great source of information and updates from Student Services! If you need additional resources to help with organization, time management, study skills, etc., you can find them through our Academic Supports Padlet. As always, students are welcome to visit Student Services or email their counselors at any time.

Ice Hockey

Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams were in action last week, with the Varsity team taking on Hayfield/South County on Friday night and the Junior Varsity battling Bishop Ireton.

The Varsity team played an evenly matched and exciting game against Hayfield/South County with the final score ending in a 4 to 4 tie.  Woodson jumped out to a 3 to 1 lead after the first period.  Hayfield/South County tied it up at 3 after the second period.  Woodson regained the lead on a goal by Carson Edington in the 3rd period, but Hayfield/South County answered with the tying goal late in the 3rd period.  Along with Carson Edington, Nathan Coons, Seth Bond (Robinson), and Shannon Force were the goal scorers.  Shannon Force also had an assist.

The teams are off for a couple of weeks, with both teams resuming play on January 27th.  Game details will be provided closer to the games.

Attendance

Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.

If your student will be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the attendance office. Below is a quick guide for reporting all-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs from school.

Attendance Procedures

FCPS Inclement Weather Procedures

Snowy Bus

The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, FCPS will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delay).

Laptop Tech Support Hours

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Our walk-in hours in Room A114 are:

  • Odd Days during Learning Seminar
  • Monday - 7:45am - 8:10am
  • Wednesday - 2:55pm - 4:00pm (when late buses start)

Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.

Late Buses Available Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Late buses are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays through spring. Students may stay after school to participate in clubs/activities and/or receive academic intervention with teachers.

Tuesday and Wednesday late buses start loading around 4:45pm and depart from Woodson at approximately 5:15pm. Students who access the smaller bus runs need to sign up for a bus in Room F122 before lunch each late bus day.

Please note, students may NOT go across the street to the shopping center after school and then return for the late bus.

Student Parking Passes

There are 2 steps to purchase a student parking pass: 1) Complete the Parking Permit Application  2) Pay on MySchoolBucks. Navigate to the School Store, select the option for a parking permit, and check out.  Bring your printed receipt with you when picking up your permit. Click here for the Woodson Student Parking website

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.
