Dear VRES Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your families enjoyed a relaxing and joyful holiday break!
Prior to the break, our committed Young Scholars met for several weeks with a focus on developing critical and creative thinking skills in the mornings prior to the school day with our fearless leaders, Ms. Brittany Wade- Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Ms. Schilling- 5th Grade Teacher and Advanced Academic Lead Teacher, Ms. Tulk- 5th Grade Teacher and Ms. Campbell-Math Resource Teacher.
As you know, the FCPS Young Scholars (YS) model seeks to identify and affirm, from an early age, students with high academic potential from groups historically underrepresented in advanced academic programming. Students enjoyed a variety of learning activities and also incorporated Portrait of a Graduate skills into their final projects. I was pleased to observe the YS model in action at our school last month. As one student shared with me, “It doesn’t seem like learning at all, we are just having fun!” Kudos to our students, families and strong instructional staff for creating opportunities for all of our students to excel! I hope you enjoy a few pictures from my visit.
You will notice that we have provided a health resource at the bottom of this message to support you and your family navigate through the health challenges at this time of year. Information about how to keep your family safe and when to keep your child at home are included in this update from the Fairfax County Health Department.
In closing, I want to invite you to our annual Viking Family Night scheduled on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 beginning at 6:30 pm. It will be an educational and fun-filled event for all!
Best wishes,
Ms. Bumbrey
