Fairfax Academy Community,

Welcome back! We are excited to kick off 2023 with our students! This is always an exciting time of year as we begin preparing for all the amazing end of year events and for next school year.  For our seniors, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our support team as you are exploring your post-secondary options. For our underclassmen, don’t forget to register for next year’s courses at the Academy when you meet with your counselor. We will be hosting student visits for prospective students throughout the month of January and  February. We also encourage all prospective students to visit our Open House on February 7. 

We know that the two hour delayed start was a shock in December. Below is a reminder about what classes meet when. A reminder that only AM block classes will meet on January 25 due to the early release.

Inclement Weather

2 Hour Delay

• FairfaxHS students follow the FHS 2 hour delay schedule
• Other (Feeder Schools) students 
• AM Block - Class is canceled. No shuttles will run.  
• Mid-day Block  - Class is canceled. No shuttles will run.
• PM Block - Follow regular bell schedule. Shuttles operate on a normal schedule.  
• Doubleblock - Students can take the PM shuttle over (if there is one from their base school). Drivers should arrive after their 3rd/4th period class is over at their base school.

If there is a 2 hour early closing, all MD and PM Academy shuttles will be canceled. Students should remain at their base schools for the day.

Staff Highlight: Renee Sterrett 

 Mrs. Renee Sterrett was born in Michigan, but she spent most of her childhood and young adulthood in New Mexico. She met her husband, Lawrence, in college at New Mexico State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s of Counseling Education. While she started her professional career as a School Counselor, she found her way to the classroom as a Special Education Teacher. Mrs. Sterrett worked as a Special Educator for 15 years at both the middle school and high school level before coming to Fairfax as an Academy Resource Teacher. Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Sterrett is a hurdle and sprint coach at one of the other FCPS high schools. Whether she is working with students in the classroom or coaching athletes on the track, Mrs. Sterrett strives to be a positive role model and source of support to students and athletes.

Mrs. Sterrett loves being with her husband, Lawrence, of 29 years and their three children: Lanae (21), Kylee (17), and Caden (14). When she can, she drags her family out to play pickleball. When that doesn’t work, she plays pickleball several days a week with people in her Kingstowne community. Mrs. Sterrett also enjoys running, riding her Peloton, and lifting weights. While Mrs. Sterrett enjoys being outside and active, she enjoys quiet moments with her family baking, watching movies, and playing games.

Mrs. Sterrett has found a home at Fairfax Academy. Working as an Academy Resource Teacher, Mrs. Sterrett is able to work with a diverse population of students across the county and learn from a variety of experts in their field. There’s nothing better than coming to a place of work where you are surrounded by people who inspire the younger generation to explore, learn, and achieve. The Academy at Fairfax is a great place to be!
