Kilmer Community,

I hope everyone has been enjoying the holiday season with friends and family. I was able to fly back to Central California for Christmas to see my family, and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed watching our kids play with their cousins and grandparents.

As students return to school in January there’s a lot happening. Although the 2nd quarter is coming to a close, we’re also beginning to plan for next year. Below is more information on Marshall’s IB program, rising 9th grade curriculum nights (both Marshall and Madison), and Crosstown Hoops tryouts. We’ll continue to communicate the dates and times of these events/activities/etc.throughout the month to ensure students and families have all the information needed.

Have a great New Year! We’ll see students back at school on Tuesday, January 3. As always, reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

End of 2nd Quarter - January 25, 2023

When students return from break they will have three weeks until the end of the 2nd quarter, the first semester of the school year. Students are encouraged to access SIS Studentvue to monitor their quarter progress and to work with their teachers if they have outstanding assignments or assessments to complete. The first day of the 3rd Quarter is Monday, January 30. At that time, students will begin their second semester electives or continue with their year long electives.

Prayer

If your student would like a dedicated space to pray please have them contact their counselor. Counselors will provide a pass for your student to access the Group Instruction Room during recess (12:30-12:45 PM) to pray. According to Fairfax County Public Schools’ guidelines, students can pray during non-instructional times and not during class time unless “not excusing the student would result in a substantial burden on the student’s religious exercise”. Students participating in prayer will be supervised during this time.

COVID Diagnostic Testing in January

Mark your calendars! COVID diagnostic testing will be available for FCPS teachers, staff, and students at five locations across the county January 3-5 from 5 to 8 p.m. This testing is for those who are either experiencing COVID symptoms or have been exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID. Appointments are not required, but registration must be completed before testing. Visit the COVID Testing webpage for more information

Student Bus Pass Program

Did you know that all FCPS Middle and High School students can sign-up for a Student Bus Pass SmarTrip card to ride the Fairfax Connector and City of Fairfax CUE bus for free? Students will need to have a parent’s/guardian’s approval for signing up and can pick up a permission form in Kilmer’s Student Services office (translations available). More information about the program, including the permission form, can be found here.Click to edit this placeholder text.

Kiss and Ride Reminders

If you drive your student to school, please take a few minutes to note the following:

  1. Students must get out on the sidewalk, not in the parking lot, this is to ensure their safety.
  2. Be courteous of others and use all available doors to keep the line moving.
  3. If you drop your student on Wolftrap road do not make u-turns across the double lines; you may be ticketed.
  4. Take your time; safety is everyone's concern.
