Academic Advising and Course Selection for 2023-24

Academic Advising Season has begun! Starting January 2023, students will meet individually with their school counselor to choose their courses for the 2023-24 school year. It is so important that parents and students are informed of their academic options. Families are encouraged to talk with current teachers for their recommendations for next school year. Just like last year, students will choose classes via their SIS Student accounts. After the students choose their courses via their accounts, they will meet with their counselor to confirm the selections. In January, parents can view the course selections via their SIS Parent account. If you do not have an active account, please contact Student Services to obtain a login.

It is important for students to choose a course load that will challenge them and help prepare them for their post-secondary endeavors while also allowing for balance with their extracurricular and personal commitments. We take academic advising and course selection seriously and encourage students to seek input from current teachers, school counselor, and their parents as they make course selections. It is important that your student base their choices on their strengths and interests and with their post-secondary plans in mind.

During the first week in January we will hold events to help students in selection appropriate courses for next school year. They are listed below. Additionally, the timeline for academic advising and course selection can be found here (English, Spanish).

AP & Electives Preview

On Wednesday, January 5th during 4th period all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students will independently explore the Virtual Curriculum Fair website. They will watch videos pertaining to the courses that are required for next year and electives that interest them or pertain to a future career interest. Students will also have time for grade conferencing and course planning. TA teachers can review 1st quarter and current 2nd quarter grades.  They will share resources on how students can finish the 2nd quarter strong – tutoring, after school help from teachers, study skills, complete homework, etc. If a student shows sign of academic success and promise, encourage them to take at least advanced academic courses next year. These conversations will make for informed decisions during the academic advising and course selection season.

AP & Electives Fair

The AP & Electives Fair will be held on Wednesday, January 5th during all lunches. All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will have the opportunity to visit with advanced placement, honors, dual enrollment and elective course teachers and hear information to help make course selections for the 2023-24 school year. The information available at the AP & Electives Fair will help guide conversations with your students about their course selections. Flyers for the event are available here (English, Spanish).

Mental Health, Coping & Addiction

One in four Americans suffers from a mental illness. Almost 3 in 5 people with mental illness will receive no treatment or medication. In 2019, an estimated 47.6 million adults (19% of the country) had a mental illness, but only 43% received any kind of mental health care (Johns Hopkins). There are many reasons why a person may turn to drugs or alcohol initially, including using these mind-altering substances as a coping mechanism for stress, difficult emotions, physical ailments, and other issues. Drugs and alcohol can provide a temporary respite from reality and everyday life. They can enhance pleasure and decrease inhibitions and anxiety.  Drug use can be an unhealthy coping mechanism. Coping mechanisms are habits formed over time that serve to help a person manage situations or stress levels. Not all coping mechanisms are maladaptive or destructive; however, addiction is both.

Before using drugs as a coping strategy, here are some recommendations for a healthier mindset. The goal is to identify the “void” or issue and work towards healing. In the meantime, experts recommend diet and exercise as great places to start. See your Primary Care Physician and a therapist if needed. Quality sleep is also a major factor in a healthy mind. Surround yourself with good people and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
