Principal Aye greets new students and welcomes them to Fairfax!
January 6, 2023
Welcome Back to the 2023 school year,
It is always so exciting to think about the infinite possibilities ahead, planning to meet our short- and long-term goals, and always remaining focused on academic success and Fairfax fun. This week students returned refreshed, reflective, and relaxed. We want to continue supporting our students in maintaining those feelings whenever life may feel a little more stressful, and our student support services department is here with a variety of resources available.
We are gearing up for course registration. There is nothing more exciting than choosing your next set of courses and electives. Be sure to discuss ALL options with your students and plan to choose courses that ensure the right fit, peak their interests, and ensure post high school preparedness.
We celebrated our “Rage on the Stage” Wrestling Senior Night this week with an exciting victory over Woodson and a blue carpet worthy showcase of our Fairfax families! We welcomed a new group of students to FHS this week, they are eager and excited to roar, hope, believe, and achieve. Tomorrow we will host our first in-person Science Olympiad with 56 teams in competition, and over 50 students working to run the event. .
The second quarter ends on January 25th and there is plenty of time to take advantage of all the support opportunities available at Fairfax High School- Lion Time, Learning Lounge, Teacher Scheduled Sessions, and Tutor.com are all here to ensure success. In this new year, we can all make it a goal and priority to take advantage of opportunities for help, support, and acceleration.
Our FHS parents and families have been busy as well as we just completed our Mental Health First Aid parent group. Each Booster Club is actively gearing up for activities, athletics, shows, concerts, and performances. Our PTSA is spreading continuous cheer and busy planning for the Spring. We also know many families are beginning to think about summer plans- jobs, camps, expos, internships, college visits, and summer school. Be on the lookout for our summer updates!
We are excited to celebrate our Outstanding Staff Members of the Year! Based on student, staff, parent, and community nominees these staff members were selected by the Nomination Selection Committee for their exemplary service and commitment to FHS.
Congratulations:
Teacher: Daniel Miller
New Teacher: Lio Quezada Guevara
Professional: Maureen Kim
Operational: Loan Huynh
Leader: Troy Ketch
Every Student, Every Strength, Every Day here at Fairfax High.

Calendar Reminder: Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Weekend of Service Opportunities

FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen. FCPS is excited to collaborate again with Volunteer Fairfax for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of Service, Saturday, January 14, to Monday, January 16. This service opportunity helps empower individuals and strengthens communities while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Volunteer Fairfax will host several ways for the community to get involved including volunteer activities for students and adults of all ages. To learn more about the MLK Jr. Weekend of Service and the specific service activities, visit Volunteer Fairfax’s website.
Calendar Reminder: Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
As a reminder, schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 16, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. Learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. See the complete 2022-23 School Year Calendar.
How to Find Weather Closings/Delays

With winter weather on the horizon, please take a moment to watch this video detailing how weather-related closing decisions are made.
FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Parents/caregivers should confirm their contact information is up-to-date in weCare@school (or, if you are an Employee, UConnect), in order to receive emails and text messages from FCPS. Bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.
Multi-Faith Space
A multi-faith space is available for students in the library during and after school. Students may use this space during non-instructional time for: prayers, religious study and practice, and silent meditation.
New Year's Resolutions
In December, many people will head to their local Target or Michaels to find a new planner. The crisp, fresh feeling of new paper to write new and improved goals gets some of us excited. When thinking of your goals consider making them SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound), this method breaks your goals down into specific objectives and makes it easier for you to track your progress. What goals would you like to share with your child, to show them examples of healthy adult introspection? Introspection, looking within, is necessary to learn how to manage stress in a healthy manner. What regular coping skills can be implemented into your daily/ weekly routine? Some goals may be physical, spiritual, financial, or emotional. Would it be easier to have serious conversations over a family dinner? Or maybe regular family dinners, spark joy and connection that’s often missing.
Research has shown that family therapy is the best treatment option for young people who misuse drugs and alcohol (SAMHSA). Many people use drugs to manage life’s hardships when they feel disconnected from themselves or others. The opposite of addiction is connection, and young people benefit from connection with their families. Families who have a common mission based on autonomy and openness instead of secrecy and silence thrive. Families teach young people how to manage stress when they communicate honestly and openly with one another. Learning how to manage stress early in life could be a major factor in whether a young person decides to use drugs.
