Fairhill Forum: Welcome 2023!

January 3, 2023

Dear Fairhill Families,

We hope you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed the time together as a family. The school was buzzing this morning with excitement as we welcomed all of our students back in the building.

As we transition back into school, we want to again thank our community for all of your support of all things Fairhill. At Fairhill, we don’t take lightly the trust that families give us each day to take care, teach, and nurture their most precious asset - their children. This new calendar year, we will stay focused on our three core values as a school: strong relationships with students, academic rigor, and connections with our community. We are deeply grateful for your partnership in that journey.

With gratitude and optimism,

Ted & Courtney

Keeping Warm During Outdoor Activities

As the cold weather months begin to move in, the weather is monitored for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent our students from being outside. This means that your child will often have the opportunity to go outside, even when it is cold out. For this reason, we encourage you to make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. We encourage you to dress your child in layers, so that they are able to adjust to their personal temperature preference throughout the day.

See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, such as a winter coat, gloves, and hat, we encourage you to reach out to our school counselors  Gihea Schwartz or Molly Young or to our family liaison Zakaria Raggad for support.

News from FCPS

Return to School Diagnostic Testing

COVID-19 diagnostic testing, provided for individuals who are symptomatic or exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19, is available at no cost for all currently enrolled FCPS students and current employees. Diagnostic testing is provided at designated times and locations for those who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19.

Testing Dates

Diagnostic testing will be held at five testing sites from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3 through Thursday, January 5, 2023.

Appointments are not needed for diagnostic testing. However, registration in the secure online portal must be completed before testing.

See below for a listing of the five locations for testing and for details about registration.

Preparing for Winter Weather

The temperature is above normal this week, but winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delay).

FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations.

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in weCare@school, bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.

Preparing Families for Difficult Conversations about Alcohol & Drugs

This is an adult only event on Tuesday January 24, from 6 to 8 pm in the Falls Church High School Library.   Click here for more information in English and here for more information in Spanish.

There will also be a virtual session on Tuesday, March 21 from 10:00 to 11:30 am.  Click here for more information.
