Letter from the Principal

Dear Wakefield Forest Families,

As we wind down 2022, we have a great deal to be grateful for as a school. I am very proud of the hard work of our staff and students, particularly given the additional stress our renovation has brought this year.

In a time when many schools are still not fully staffed, WFES has all positions filled. We have had strong substitutes filling in for our teachers on leave and many of our parents have stepped up to substitute in our building to keep us operational. We couldn't do it without them.

Thank you for partnering with me to boost our staff through the PTA and on your own. Every positive note, email and comment makes a huge impact on the individual. It also increases our chances of being fully staffed again next school year because it creates a positive work environment. Your support helps make WFES an amazing place to learn and work.

We wish you a wonderful winter break!

Sharyn Prindle

Principal

Second Quarter Interims

Interims were sent home in Thursday folders on December 15th for students in kindergarten - sixth grade who have areas of concern at this point in the second quarter. Interims were not sent to students who currently have no areas of concern. All students have a mix of strengths and weaknesses. Interims and progress reports are intended to inform families on student progress. If you have questions or concerns please reach out to your child's classroom teacher.

ESSER Funding

Every school in FCPS received ESSER funding to support their school. This year we are using the bulk of the ESSER money to fund:

  • Two part time math intervention staff members. These teachers will provide support to identified students with weaknesses in the area of math.
  • Every classroom at WFES has a calming kit and space for students to access these tools if needed. We are adding calming kits for specialists (music, PE, art, etc.) so students have access across the building.
  • Mindfulness for first grade this fall. Mindfulness is a research based practice for developing coping strategies and stress management skills.

Supporting WFES Students in Need

giftcard

Thank you so much for the generous donations to our families in need. We were able to support a number of families with gift cards and toys this week. We appreciate our counselors, family liaison, ESOL team and Social Worker for their efforts on behalf of our families.

Mindfulness

Thanks to a donation from the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, MindsInc. will be able to provide mindfulness strategy sessions to our second through sixth grade students in 2023 at no cost to the school. Our first graders participated in 8 weeks of mindfulness instruction this fall.

Our renovation continues to be on track. Renovation will continue during winter break. We expect impacts to the sidewalk along Iva Lane while the team works on drainage.

Information for Rising 7th Grade

Upcoming Frost MS events for 6th grade families

We are eager to begin our upcoming transition activities with our future Frost Falcons!  Please mark your calendars for our Rising 7th Grade Orientation on January 26th and the Frost Family Festival on February 9th.  More information is included below on each of these events and a full list of our upcoming activities was sent home to all 6th graders in Thursday folders this week.

The Rising 7th Grade Orientation is for current 6th grade students who will be attending Frost in the 2023-24 school year and their parents.  This will take place virtually on January 26th at 6:30 PM. During this event you will hear from administration and school counselors who will provide an overview of Frost Middle School, course selection opportunities and the selection process.  The link for this event will be sent in January.  A recording of the event will be available for those who cannot attend on our Frost Student Services website here.

Please submit questions you may have about transitioning to 7th Grade at Frost Middle School.  We will do our best to incorporate as many answers to your questions during the orientation. Please use this link to submit questions.

Frost will also be having the Frost Family Festival (in-person) on February 9th beginning at 5:30 PM.  This is a great opportunity to get a school tour and visit elective classes to help confirm desired course selections.  More information to come!

SNOW Days - Reminder

snow

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning.

  • Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction starting at 10:30 AM. A delayed start will give staff time to adjust their plans to a virtual format.
  • Students will begin bringing their FCPS provided devices to and from school following winter break. We will use zoom as our platform for virtual instruction. We will be practicing with students at school and will send home additional information about supporting your child at home.

FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in weCare@school, bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.
