Families: Please Join Us Virtually on December 12th for Math Night
Math is for everyone! Join Ms. Barber and Ms. Bukovac for a night of exploring ways to create a culture of math learning at home. Learn how to turn everyday experiences into meaningful (and fun!) math-based conversations – at the table, on the couch, at the grocery store, or at the bus stop – Math is all around us!

Our teachers are working hard to get to know the needs of each of our students. It is always important that we know where there might be gaps in our students' knowledge, where they might need additional support and where they are excelling. To identify these, we use screeners and benchmark exams.
Last week, students took the Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) in math. Next week, students who missed either the reading or math assessment will be assessed in a makeup session. This is a state required exam that is used to measure student growth and progress in reading and mathematics. These are no "passing" or "failing" marks and students are not expected to study. Results are used as a starting point to identify areas of strength and growth. Parents will be able to view score reports in the spring.
VGA Dates:
- VGA Makeups: December 12th – December 16th
Upcoming Assessments:
Week of January 9th: iReady Reading
Week of January 17th: iReady Math
End of January-March: WIDA Access for ELs (specific dates will be shared closer to the assessment)
If you have any questions in regards to upcoming assessments, please contact our School Testing Coordinators Nicole Cassidy or Nicole Scher at 703-503-2700.
Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Stephanie Gardner (sngardner1@fcps.edu) or Denise Cash-Pinckney (dcashpinckne@fcps.edu) no later than December 15.
Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.
Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Stephanie Gardner (sngardner1@fcps.edu) or Denise Cash-Pinckney (dcashpinckne@fcps.edu).
Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.
For more information, you can access the FCPS AAP website.
Save the dates! Glasgow curriculum night will take place on January 18th 2023. In case of Inclement weather, the scheduled snow date will be January 25th 2023. More information coming soon!
Also, rising 6th grade transitions will occur in February and March. Everyone is working to make this transition smooth and meaningful for our students and families. Communications will be sent to our rising 6th grade families in January with additional details.
Thank you for your support!
