Winter Session After-School Activities

Registration for winter session after-school activites is coming soon. Activities are offered for one hour immediately after school and run from mid Jan. to mid March. We hope you’ll sign up so that we can continue to have a robust offering. Our tentative schedule is:

  • Tuesday: Basketball, Pottery, Yoga
  • Wednesday: Running, Floor hockey, Cartooning
  • Thursday: Fencing & Archery, Cooking, Hip Hop, Art Club

These activities are coordinated and offered thanks to the PTA and parent volunteers. They are a benefit of PTA membership, and you must be a PTA member in order for your child to participate.

Registration for the Franklin Sherman Art Club with Miss Pam is now open.

Mitten Tree Gift Card Drive

We are collecting gift cards for SHARE this holiday season. They requested gift cards to local grocery stores (e.g., Safeway, Giant and Lidl, as well as Target, Amazon). Requested denominations are $25 and $50, but any amount is welcomed. The cards will be used by local families for holiday, seasonal and everyday needs.

To participate, have your child take a mitten from the “Gift Card Mitten Tree” in the FSES Lobby or sign up online, then purchase the requested gift card and return it to the FSES Main Office in an envelope marked “Attention PTA.” Your child may write his/her name on the mitten and return it to the tree!

Please help us beat last year's contribution of 46 gift cards for SHARE totaling more than $1,250!

If you have any questions, please reach out to Katie Spillenkothen.

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delay).

FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in weCare@school, bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.

In the event of a virtual learning day you will find specific information about accessing instruction on the Franklin Sherman ES webpage.
