From the Principal’s Pen
Dear Laurel Hill Families,
It was amazing to see the wonderful talent of our students during the Winter Strings Concert! A special thanks to our strings teachers, Rachel Plumer and Signe Mortensen, for an outstanding job!
We have many more wonderful staff members who go above and beyond the call of duty. It is an honor to highlight this year's Outstanding Employee Nominations. These honorees will move on to our pyramid level for an opportunity to represent the South County High School Pyramid at the Region 4 level. Congratulations to the following:
OUTSTANDING TEACHER: DEVETTA BOYCE
OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEE: RACHEL MORRIS
OUTSTANDING PRINCIPAL: JANICE DALTON
OUTSTANDING LEADER: ADDISON SMITH
OUTSTANDING OPERATIONAL EMPLOYEE: EMMA EICHENBERGER
Please take a moment to review the information below regarding our Kiss & Ride procedures. REMEMBER, students can not be dropped off before 9:05am. It is vitally important to keep our students and families safe. Thank you in advance for adhering to this protocol.
Finally, let's take some time during the winter break (December 19 to January 2) to prioritize self-care and extend kindness to others. We hope you all find ways to relax, enjoy time with family and friends, and be safe. See you in the new year!
Sincerely,
Janice Dalton, Principal
Addison Smith, Assistant Principal
Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal

LHES News:
Kiss & Ride
Parents who use Kiss & Ride: School begins at 9:05 am and the tardy bell rings at 9:20 am. There are no staff members available to supervise students before 9:05am. Students can be dropped off no earlier that 9:05 am. Only our patrol students are allowed to arrive at 9:00 am to enter the building. Students who arrive earlier than 9:05am will wait outside with parent supervision. To avoid being late, we strongly advise being in the Kiss & Ride line no later than 9:15am. Students who arrive after Kiss & Ride has closed (at 9:20am) must be escorted by their parents into the main office to be checked in. Parents should park in a parking space when checking in a student.
Applying for the AAP Full-time Level IV Program
Attention Families, the FCPS window for accepting AAP Level IV applications for the 2023-24 school year is now open. The Level IV program is the advanced academics full-time program for grades 3-8. If your family is applying, the last day to apply is December 15. Interested families should apply as soon as possible. Hard copies of the application materials must be given to Mrs. Clatterbuck in the front office to be included in district screening. There are no exceptions to this deadline.
**Families with students already in Level IV classes do not need to reapply.**
If you have any questions with this process, please contact Mrs. Clatterbuck via email at MHClatterbuc@fcps.edu.
Lost & Found Items
We have a huge collection of hoodies and jackets in our Lost & Found area. If your child is missing a hoodie or jacket, chances are we have it. Please have your child look in our Lost & Found for missing apparel. Parents, feel free to look before or after school for items as well.
Community Events:
Potomac Music is offering a winter ukulele camp for ages 6-10. Please see the flyer linked here.
FCPS News:
COVID Diagnostic Testing in January
Mark your calendars! COVID diagnostic testing will be available for FCPS teachers, staff, and students at five locations across the county January 3-5 from 5 to 8 p.m. This testing is for those who are either experiencing COVID symptoms or have been exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID. Appointments are not required, but registration must be completed before testing. Visit the COVID Testing webpage for more information.
Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Laurel Hill Elementary School's main office to speak with our parent liaison (Teresa Smith), counselors (Kori Coleman and Marianne Reznikoff), or social worker (Liz Mallon).
Parent Advocacy Handbook Distribution
The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) has created a Parent Advocacy Handbook to provide information and support to families as they navigate the FCPS system for their children. It is designed to be particularly useful for families who may be less familiar with such a large school division and/or with schooling in the U.S.
Please use the link below to access the parent advocacy handbook. https://www.fcps.edu/parentadvocacyhandbook
