December School-Wide Morning Meeting

school wide morning meeting

Friday morning we had our school-wide morning meeting! 6th grade hosted grades 4 and 5, and 3rd grade hosted grades K, 1, and 2 for a morning meeting around self control, which is our Positivity Project focus strength. Both morning meetings included fun greetings, shares, and activities, as well as a closing message. See a video of 6th graders doing the freeze dance activity!

get involved

Family Liaison Corner

by Susana Trupo

"At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents." -Jane D.

There are tons of great reasons for parents to get involved in school. Children whose parents are involved in their education tend to earn better grades and have fewer behavior problems. They are more likely to continue their education beyond high school, among other benefits.

How can something so easy pay off in such a big way? It’s simple, really. When you make time to go to parent-teacher conferences or volunteer at the school, you show your child just how much you care about your child’s education. And your child will be more likely to care about it, too. Here are some ideas for getting involved and presenting at your child’s school. We love to see you at Cameron!

Help the teacher

  • Volunteer in your child’s classroom.
  • Prepare materials for craft projects.
  • Tutor, a student.
  • Chaperone a field trip.
  • Help with class parties.

Support the parent-teacher group

  • Attend PTO or PTA meetings.
  • Make flyers to promote parent group events.
  • Go to a school family night—and help clean up after it’s over.
  • Help with teacher appreciation efforts.
  • Take pictures at events for the school newsletter.

Help with special events

  • Supervise an activity at field day.
  • Work a shift at the schoolbook fair.
  • Pick up trash or pull weeds during a campus cleanup day.
  • Build sets or make costumes for the school play.
  • Answer questions from new parents on registration night.

Give staff members a break

  • Monitor the playground during recess
  • Volunteer in the front office.
  • Make photocopies for teachers.
  • Shelve library books.
  • Help the art teacher display student projects.

Use your skills

  • Talk to students about your job or hobby.
  • Organize a before-school running club.
  • Install new software in the computer lab.
  • Lay out the school newsletter.
  • Update the school website.

It's the most wonderful time of the year... it's time for the Book Fair! The fair began today and will be open during school hours all next week (Dec 5-9). This is a great opportunity for your students to find good books and become bolder, prouder, stronger readers!

We want to invite families to celebrate reading during our Family Night event on Tuesday, December 6th from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. Come to the library after school to shop the book fair and be entered in a prize drawing for fun giveaways like posters and books!

Check out the Book Fair webpage to shop online from now until December 14th, sign up to volunteer, and set up an eWallet so your student can shop the fair without having to carry cash.

Reminder:  Window for AAP Full-Time (Level IV) Referrals Ends December 15, 2022

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-6 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (Full-Time level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Full-Time Level IV Referral Form to our AART, Tiffany Reed, at tlreed@fcps.edu no later than December 15

The window to submit an AAP Full-Time Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted. It is strongly recommended that you also complete the Parent Questionnaire, also found on the forms page.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Tiffany Reed at tlreed@fcps.edu

Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings at Cameron ES.
